  2. Some observations… • Many agencies ahead of the discretionary curve • Total research “cut” (?) ~$1.3 billion,1.9% • Both basic and applied • While development boosted

  3. Agency observations • NSF: Only SBE increased (NCSES) • ENG flat (except SBIR) • NSF-wide initiatives: boosts for neuroscience, Innovation Corps • NASA: Space Technology (+23%), Heliophysics, Commercial Crew (+22%) escape the knife • Dept. of Transportation: • Highway R&D and Intelligent Transportation Systems boosted (19%) • High-performance rail R&D

  4. Looking ahead… • Congress marking up at current cap level • Senate: no budget resolution • House budget? • Moving quickly? • Can R&D stay ahead of the curve?
