  10. ENTERPRISE REGISTER BUILDING A BUSINESS (ENTERPRISE) REGISTER INSTRUMENTS Purpose • Frame for sample surveys • Grouping businesses according to different criteria Objective • Installation of a business (enterprise) register and its regular updating 10

  11. Results INSTRUMENTS BUILDING A BUSINESS (ENTERPRISE) REGISTER • Building up business registers  using the census of 1995 as a basis • Installation of two central register databases  165,000 large and 5,000 very large businesses 11

  12. INSTRUMENTS SAMPLE SURVEYS Purpose • Timely and conclusive statistical results • Low cost of collection and processing • Small burden on respondents Objective • Sample surveys on production, sales (turnover) and employment are conducted in the whole country in monthly intervals 12

  13. INSTRUMENTS SAMPLE SURVEYS Results • Monthly data on production, sales and employment of small businesses with a gross output of less than 5 million Yuans RMB • Application in the whole country • Sampling with regard to ad hoc questions • Elaboration of a manual 13

  14. METHODS SHORT-TERM BUSINESS Indices Purpose • Short-term observation of business trends • Quarterly estimation of GDP Prerequisite: transition from quantity-based indices to price-based indices Objective • Monthly calculation of production and sales indices 14
