Why do students who participate in extra-curricular activities achieve more? • Activities have structure that help students grow & mature • There are often qualifications that students must have & keep in order to maintain membership in the activity • There is an activity coach/mentor/sponsor that is helping you monitor your child • Your child has a small, supportive peer group • Your child is engaged in learning that they really enjoy

  15. What Extra Curricular Activities does OPHS Provide? Please reference the list…. OPHS has 395 students enrolled in an extra-curricular activity! That’s 35% of the student body. This number is even higher when you take into account student athletes.

  16. What Off-Campus Learning Activities does OPHS Provide? CASA – Center for the Advanced Studies & Arts http://www.casa-online.org/ Offers a variety of honors and Advance Placement classes. Students attend OPHS in the AM, and go to CASA in the PM. OSTC-Oakland Schools Technical Campuses http://www.ostconline.com/ Offers in-depth technical & vocational programs, ranging from cosmetology, to automotive engineering/repair to veterinary science, to business marketing. Students can enroll in either AM or PM. HOSA – Health Occupations Students of America www.hosa.org

How can you support your child in getting involved in an activity? • Help them discover what interests them (Ask for Career Cruising & EDP Results in late May) or take a career survey at http://www.iseek.org/careers/clusterSurvey 2. Develop a schedule with them to maximize their participation in the activity. Make it a part of your regular routine. 3. Arrange for your child to visit a local college campus that caters to their interests. (Spring Break!) 4. Enforce the expectation that participation in extra-curricular activities is a standard in your home.
