The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, was a pivotal document in American history. Proposed by John Hancock and drafted by Thomas Jefferson, it marked the formation of a new nation: the United States of America. The document was signed by 56 delegates in Philadelphia, amidst rising tensions with Great Britain due to various oppressive acts. It was read to the American Army by George Washington and printed in newspapers shortly after. This document set the stage for independence and inspired future democratic movements.

WHO Was Involved? • Original • John Hancock suggested the Americans should form a new nation called the United States of America. • Thomas Jefferson was chose to write the Declaration of Independence. • Additional signers • Benjamin Franklin and John Adams made a few minor changes to the Declaration of Independence. • 56 people signed the Declaration of Independence. WHERE Did It Happen? • Philadelphia • The Declaration of Independence was adopted by Congress on June 4, 1776 in Philadelphia. • New York • John Hancock gave General George Washington a copy of the Declaration in New York. • Delegates began to sign the engrossed copy of the Declaration of Independence. • A large British reinforcement arrived at New York after being repelled at Charles ton , S.C. on August 2, 1776. ! WHY Did It Happen? • Acts passed by Parliament • The stamp act of 1765,the Town shed acts of 1773 and the tea act of 1773 made the colonists so mad they wanted independence. • On March 18,1776 the stamp act repealed but on the same day parliament passed the declaratory act. • The King • King George 3 ascended the throne of England in 1773. • Getting closer to Independence • Thomas Paine published Common Sense which pushed the colonies closer to independence. WHEN Did It Happen? PUT PICTURE HERE • During and after the Declaration was written • On January 18, 1777 congress ordered that the declaration be sent to the states. • Richard Henry Lee read and signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. • Before the Declaration was written • Benjamin Franklin and colonial leaders met in Philadelphia in Sept. 1774 to talk about troubles with England. • On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee rose In Congress and said that the Americans should be free, independent states. WHAT Happened? • Fighting with England • Even though the Americans were fighting they weren’t ready for independence • Since England was so powerful the Americans didn’t know how they would win independence • The Declaration • A few passages were removed from the Declaration of independence. • Most of the other changes for the declaration dealt with style.
