Huntington’s Disease • Huntington's disease is a genetic disorder passed down through families in which nerve cells in certain parts of the brain waste away, or degenerate.
Huntington’s Disease • If one of your parents has it, you have a 50% chance of getting it. • Onset of the symptoms usually starts around age 40. • One of the common traits marked in pedigrees • First Genetic Disease Mapped to a Chromosome (#4)

CREATE YOUR OWN PEDIGREE • Think of a trait that some (but not all) of your family members carry. • Some examples may be: • Left-Handedness • Curly Hair • Tongue Rolling • Widow’s Peak • Attached Earlobes • Freckles • Allegies • Cleft Chin • …….
SECOND STEP… • Begin By Drawing your family members, using a • CIRCLE—Women/girls • SQUARE—Men/Boys • DO NOT SHADE ANYTHING AT THIS POINT Here is a diagram to help you remember how to draw one:
THIRD STEP • If anyone is deceased, Make a diagonal slash mark through their circle or square. • Then use a Marker to Color in any family member with the trait. • If you do not know the trait for sure, you can take it home and complete it over the weekend.
FOURTH STEP • Label your pedigree with your name, your family name • Place a “key” at the bottom or side indicating what each shape means.
