Harlaxton Travel Workshop An Interactive Learning Experience
Travel Styles • Laid Back • You like to relax when on trips and take your time seeing certain sights or enjoying certain attractions/local culture. • You can go with the flow and even if you don’t see everything you wanted to you won’t be disappointed. • Take a nap when you need one. • Jam-Packed • You like to see and do everything while at a certain destination and learn all you can about another culture. • You must always be doing something from the time you wake up in the morning to the time you go to bed at night.
Planning Styles • Super Structured • Trips planned weeks/months in advance • Reservations made for all activities • Detailed itinerary of scheduled events & activities • Spontaneous • Trips planned several days/one week in advance • No idea what activities or sites interest you • Prepared Yet Flexible • Trips planned well in advance • Some idea of the activities and sites that interest you, but most of all you have room in your schedule • Reservations made for major attractions
Know Your Budget • Three Types • Tight (under $2,000) • Moderate ($2,000-$6,000) • Substantial (over $7,000)
Tight Budget • Under $2,000 • Utilize school trips • Think of how you want to spend the money you have: 2 or 3 large independent trips or 6-8 small ones • Plan in advance and look for deals/discounts on airfare and lodging; find cheaper destinations • Free hostel food and purchase food from grocery stores/markets or coffee shops with one nicer, cultural meal • Hang out at the manor on the weekends. It’s super fun and you’ll get to bond with the other people there.
Moderate Budget • $2,000~$6,000 • 4-10 independent weekend trips • What’s important to you: hostel amenities/location, authentic eateries, souvenirs, attractions, etc.? • Keep track of how much you are spending and prioritize all that you do purchase
Substantial Budget • Over $7,000 • Don’t spend all your money just because you have it • Be generous, yet understanding when faced with the financial situations of others
Who to Travel With • Old & New Friends • Yes, you love them, but… • Are your travel & planning styles compatible? • Are you interested in doing the same things or do you want to break off into smaller groups? • Are your budgets compatible? • Old & New Acquaintances • Well, you don’t really know them that much, but… • Are they going to a destination your friends don’t want to go? • Are they interested in doing the same things you are? • Are your budgets compatible?
Extra Tips • When traveling in groups, make sure everyone books together. Double check you are all booked for the same train, flight, hostel, etc. • Take your confirmations (paper/digital copies) with you when traveling. • Remember all steps of transportation and factor in extra time for minor delays when scheduling: • Manor • Taxi • Train • Flight • Train/bus/walk • Hostel
Railcards • Recommended • Oyster Card for London Underground: Even if you are just going for the London trip and the British Studies trip, you will save time and money by buying this card • Railcard: You will get the discounted rate for every train ticket you book. This will save you LOTS of money! Yes, there is a group discount rate without railcards, but it must be paid on one credit/debit card. This sometimes creates problems among groups since everyone must keep track of how many times they’ve used their card on others.
Airports • Heathrow: mainly used by students only for flights to and from home (US) • Luton: easy to get to; located slightly north of London (closer to manor) • Gatwick: easy to get to; easy train access directly from London St. Pancras • Stansted: not terribly hard to get to; more students run into problems along the way or once they arrive • Southend: harder to get to; longer transport; must go from train to underground to train
Example Trip • I will be walking you through each and every step of booking a typical weekend. • For this workshop, I will be booking a weekend trip to Madrid from November 21-24, 2013. • A priority for my trip is to go to the Prado Museum on Saturday, November 23. • My budget is $350
Plan Your Weekend! • Please get in groups of 2-4 • Decide which budget range you would like to volunteer for (All 3 budget ranges are to be equally represented so you have an idea—wherever your budget may be—of what to expect to get with your money) • Book a trip from Harlaxton Manor to Amsterdam, Netherlands on November 21-24, 2013 • For these purposes, you get out of class at 12:00pm on Thursdays • Remember to book train tickets, airfare, bus fare, etc. • You must still have money for food, attractions, and souvenirs
