  1. Academic Language Academic language is the language that is unique to a specific to a discipline. They are words that allow a person to show their depth and knowledge of a specific subject. For example when teaching Totalitarian governments words like: Bolshevik, Gulag, Fascism, Nazism, anti-semitism

  2. How do you teach academic language?

  3. Daily History Students bring a spiral notebook to keep all academic language for the year. Part of daily routine. Students come in to the classroom, record the two words in a modified cornell notes formal, then read the text to find the words. Some terms are easy to identify others require reading.

  4. These words become the spring board for the daily lesson. These are also the words that continue to reappear to the students throughout their study of a particular topic.

  5. Benefits Rituals provide structure for classroom management. Understanding the selected words helps students understand the words in context. It provides time for academic reading. Teaches organization. Tons of extension activities that go along with the topic.
