  1. THE RISE OF NATIONAL SOCIALISM HITLER AND THE NAZIS GAIN CONTROL OF GERMANY

  2. NATIONAL SOCIALIST GERMANY National Socialism was a political philosophy that was closely related to Fascism in Italy. Throughout the 1920’s the Nazi Party struggled to be relevant in German society. With the coming of the Great Depression, the Nazi Party finally found the support in Germany that they needed to rise to power.

  3. NATIONAL SOCIALISM • NAZISM = FASCISM + HITLER • One party system • Extreme nationalism • Demanded sacrifice by the population • Extremely anti-Communist • State above individual • Corporative System • Hitler and the Nazi Party

  4. The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these in slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan. As soon as you sacrifice this slogan and try to be many-sided, the effect will piddle away, for the crowd can neither digest nor retain the material offered. In this way the result is weakened and in the end entirely cancelled out. JOSEPH GOEBBELS, NAZI PROPAGANDA MINISTER

  5. NATIONAL SOCIALISM • WEIMAR GOVERNMENT-the German democratic government from 1919 to 1933. • 1918-the Kaiser abdicated and the new government asked for an armistice in WW I. • 1919-the Weimar Government signed the Treaty of Versailles. • 1923-the Weimar Government mass produced its currency to pay its debts, destroying their monetary system.

  6. NATIONAL SOCIALISM

  7. NATIONALISM SOCIALISM • 1929/30-The Great Depression struck, Germany’s economy collapsed. • 1930/32-Nazis and Communists fought to be the party that controlled Germany. • 1932-Presidential Election in Germany *Hitler vs Hindenburg* (Hitler loses/Nazi Party wins big)

  8. NATIONAL SOCIALISM • Paul von Hindenburg became president of Germany. • He chose several individuals to be the Chancellor, but none were able to form a government. • Franz von Papen/Oskar Hindenburg support the idea of making Hitler chancellor. Why? • Eventually, Hindenburg chose the leader of the largest political party in Germany to be Chancellor. That man was Adolf Hitler.
