  27. SELF-FULFILLING PROPHECY What you believe about yourself and others has a tendency to come true is known as Self-Fulfilling Prophecy.

  28. INCREASE EMPATHY To improve your perception of other people, you must strive to increase your empathy, your ability to experience the world as others do. When you empathize with another person, his or her experience becomes your own, you understand her or his reasons for behaving and feeling in particular ways and you understand these things as the other person understands them.

  29. ASSESING EMPATHY IN FRIENDSHIP. The following questions can help you determine the degree to which empathy is part of a friendship. 1. Does your friend understand most of what you say? 2. Does your friend understand how you feel? 3. Does your friend appreciate what your experiences feel like to you? 4. Does your friend try to see things through your eyes? 5. Does your friend ask you questions about what your experiences mean to you? 6. Does your friend ask you questions about what you’re thinking? 7. Does your friend ask you questions about you’re feeling? .

  30. Language And Meaning. Language is symbolic: that is, words have no meaning in themselves but are arbitrary letter combinations that stand for or represents something. The word Pizza is not edible and the word Water is not drinkable. The relationship between a symbol and what it symbolizes is arbitrary, agreed upon by the people who uses the symbol. Learning the rules for how the meanings and symbols are connected.

  31. ABSTRACT AND CONCRETE SYMBOLS Symbols differ in the degree to which what they refer to is Concrete or Abstract. Concrete symbols are highly specific and refer to one thing. Abstract symbols are general and may refer to many things.

  32. LADDER OF ABSTRACTION. From Abstract to Concrete The Toy Whiter two-seater 1973 MGB sports car with black top Sports Car Car Vehicle Mechanical Object Invention

  33. ACTIVITY. Constructing a ladder of Abstraction Select the name of your pet, the address of your house or apartment, or the name of an article of clothing you are wearing and place it on the bottom rung of the ladder of Abstraction. 1.Complete each step of the ladder with one or more words until you are at the most abstract level. ________________________________ Most Abstract level ________________________________ ________________________________ Most concrete level. 2. 34. ACTIVITY Finding Midpoints Between Extremes Describe the midpoint for each of the following pairs of the words. 1. Honest --------------------------- dishonest. 2. Graceful ------------------------- Clumsy 3. Big--------------------------------- Little. 4. Smart------------------------------ Stupid.

  35. BODY LANGUAGE- THE MOST POWERFUL COMMUNICATION CHANNEL

  36. Appear Self Assured and in Control Do things one at a Time 1. Regardless of how rushed you are, take a breath before you make your entrance. 2. Make sure your clothes are in order, your hair is in place. 3. Your papers or other equipment are neatly tucked away in your Briefcase or other carrying case. 4. Be sure nothing is spilling out of your case, pockets, or hands.

  37. Walk in as if you had nothing more on your mind than going through that door

  38. YOUR POSTURE: Confidence-maker or confidence-breaker? Spine is curved forward- showing lack of energy and confidence or old age

  39. Stand straight! Good posture is basically erect Posture

  40. Standing so erect that the back is arched, curving backwards. In military this stance is supported by ‘chest up’ taught to depict confidence. Out of that context it is taken as a sign of rigidity

  41. Stand Erect: Stand with your feet about eight inches apart, hands at your side. In your imagination, run a cord from the base of your spine, up through your neck, and out the top of your head.

  42. Do not stand with your feet close together; you can be pushed over quite easily, both physically and symbolically. If your feet are farther apart, you are certainly solid and cannot be pushed over easily, but the width of your stance conveys violence, an attitude that is usually too strong for the audience.

  43. Don't tilt the shoulders downwards either to the right or left; this makes you seem unwilling to carry your load. In good postures, the shoulders are “square” that is to say, leveled.

  44. Use “ Neutral stance” to express solid confidence and reliability, without appearing aggressive or hostile. Here the knees should be straight but not stiff, and your arms should hang loosely by your sides, hands relaxed and easy.

  45. Postures denoting ambivalent/two mindedness foot positions which are read as denoting irritation or restlessness, unwillingness to “Stand One’s Own ground”.

  46. Posture showing lack of interest or Overconfidence.

  47. WHAT TO DO WITH ALLTHOSE ARMS AND HANDS Fisted hands convey hostility and should be avoided. Fists with the fingers curled around the thumb convey anger and powerlessness and should also be avoided.

  48. Express openness and non-defensiveness with the neutral arm position; that’s arms hanging loosely by your sides, hands relaxed, palms facing your legs.

  49. Arms crossed in front of the body at chest level project defensiveness, a closing off. As with other body expressions of anger, crossed arms need to be used with caution. Anger tends to alienate others unless you have a truly valid reason to be angry. If you hold onto your arms with your hands in an across-the-chest position, you are literally : “Holding onto yourself” which conveys fear and worry.

  50. If you cross one arm chest height across your body and hold the other arm, you express insecurity or fear. Another arm position that is to be used sparingly is the “ Arms Akimbo” positions with the body pitched forward as it may be interpreted as aggressiveness by your boss. In the right context both arms akimbo while standing erect suggests readiness, interest and energy.
