  1. INTELLIGENT HERITAGE IN FP6 Jan Hoorens European Commission DG INFSO-D2 CULTURAL HERITAGE APPLICATIONS

  2. INTELLIGENT HERITAGE IN FP6 THE FOCUS

  3. INTELLIGENT HERITAGE FOCUS • MUSEUMS, MONUMENTS AND SITES • AMBIENT INTELLIGENCE • ENHANCED USER EXPERIENCES • APPLICATION/OBJECTIVE DRIVEN APPLIED RESEARCH • NOE ACTIVITY FOCUS • STREPS DEMO ACTIVITY FOCUS

  4. MUSEUMS, MONUMENTS AND SITES • ICOM DEFINITION “A museum is a non-profit making, permanent institution in the service of society and of its development, and open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits, for purposes of study, education and enjoyment, material evidence of people and their environment. (...)” • ICOMOS DEFINITION “ The term ”monument" shall include all structures which are of value from the historical, artistic, architectural, scientific or ethnological point of view. This definition shall include works of monumental sculpture and painting, elements or structures of an archaeological nature, inscriptions, cave dwellings and all combinations of such features” • ICOMOS DEFINITION : “ The term "site" shall include all topographical areas and landscapes, the works of man or the combined works of nature and of man, including historic parks and gardens, which are of value from the archaeological, historical, aesthetic, ethnological or anthropological point of view.”

  5. AMBIENT INTELLIGENCE • WORK PROGRAMME 2002-2003 “The focus of IST in FP6 is on the future generation of technologies in which computers and networks will be integrated into the everyday environment, rendering accessible a multitude of services and applications through easy-to-use human interfaces. This vision of "ambient intelligence" places the user, the individual, at the centre of future developments for an inclusive knowledge‑based society for all.” • ISTAG REPORT AMIBIENT INTELLEGENCE SCENARIOS FOR 2010 “ The concept of Ambient Intelligence (AmI) provides a vision of the Information Society where the emphasis is on greater user-friendliness, more efficient services support, user-empowerment, and support for human interactions. People are surrounded by intelligent intuitive interfaces that are embedded in all kinds of objects and an environment that is capable of recognising and responding to the presence of different individuals in a seamless, unobtrusive and often invisible way. “

  6. AMBIENT INTELLIGENCEIST : the way to an “all inclusive knowledge society” • IST today • PC based …………………………….. • “Writing and reading”…………….…. • Low bandwidth………………………. • Mobile telephony (voice)…………..… • Steep usage learning curve…………... • “Word” based information search……. • Only 5% of global population on-line.. “Ambient Intelligence” tomorrow “Our surrounding” is the interface Use all senses, intuitive Infinite bandwidth and performance Mobile/Wireless full multimedia Effortless mode of interaction Context-based knowledge handling >70% of world-wide population on line
