  1. Objective: Use the positive and negative space found in lettering • Use both the positive space and the negative space of the letters in your first and last name to make a symmetrical name banner.

  2. Step 1 • Fold the background paper in half length ways. The letters (Positive space) will go on the top to spell your name. The leftover paper cuttings (negative space) will go on the bottom in reverse (symmetry).

  3. Important! • Cut and glue ONE letter at at time! The pieces of negative space becomes like a jigsaw puzzle. • Each letter and its negative space pieces must be placed touching the last letter and its negative pieces.

  4. Step 2 • Lightly draw a “block” letter on the precut paper rectangle. The outside of the letter must touch all four sides of the paper rectangle.

  5. Step 3 • Cut out the letter (positive space). Be sure to save the leftover pieces after cutting (negative space).

  6. Step 4 • Use the fold crease in the middle of the long background paper as a guide on which to assemble and place your letter and its negative space pieces .

  7. Step 5 • Glue the letter (positive space) to the top of the background paper. The sides of the letter should touch the edge of the paper and the fold line.

  8. Step 6 • Assemble and glue the negative space pieces below the crease/fold. When pieced together correctly, the negative space creates the letter.

  9. Materials: • 6” x 24” white paper • color construction paper rectangles • scissors • Glue • pencil

  10. Grading Criteria • Positive space 40 pts. • Negative space 40 pts. • Craftsmanship 20 pts. • (time, effort, neatness)
