Objectives • Understand why being able to conduct research independently is important to your education…. and your life! • Know how to search MCPL’s online catalog for books on a particular topic. • Know how to find a book in another library and request it. • Know how to find information in MCPL’s online databases.

  7. Scanning the Shelf When you locate a book by its call number, it’s likely to be surrounded by books on the same topic, or on topics closely related to the one you are researching. Take a few moments to explore nearby titles. Look in their indexes for your topic. Are you finding any other useful material?

  8. The Shelf Scan • Note recurring call numbers from your online catalog searches. • Go to the library shelves and scan books that are in and near that call number. • Check the index of promising titles for your subject terms. • Don’t forget the reference section!
