  2. WHAT IS WORK? Work is said to be done only when a force acts on an object and displaces it or makes it move. Work is force applied over distance. Examples of work include lifting an object against the Earth's gravitation, driving a car up a hill, and pulling down a captive helium balloon. Work is a mechanical manifestation of energy. CONDITIONS REQUIRED FOR WORK DONE: - A force should act on an object. The object must be displaced

  3. Look at these examples No work is done Work is done

  4. WORK DONE WORK DONE = FORCE * DISPLACEMENT W=F*S UNITS OF WORK If force is 1Newton and S is 1m then the work done by force will be 1 nm W=F*S W=1N*1m W=1joule or 1J DEFINITION OF 1 JOULE One Joule is the amount of Work done on an object when a force of 1N displaced 1m along the line of action of force.

  5. TYPES OF WORK 1.Positive work 2.Negative work 3.Zero work WORK DONE BY CONSTANT FORCE CASE 1: When force is acting in the direction of displacement then WORK DONE IS POSITIVE Work done =Force * Displacement W=F*s W=+VE Work is positive

  6. CASE 2: When force is acting opposite to the direction of displacement then WORK DONE IS NEGATIVE Work done= Force * Displacement W=F*S W=-F*S W=-VE Work is negative IN THIS FIGURE WORK DONE IS POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE

  7. CASE-3 When force is acting perpendicular to an object then WORK DONE IS ZERO W=F*S W=F*0 W=0 Work done is zero

  8. CASE-4 When force is causing no displacement then WORK DONE IS ZERO W=F*S W=F*0 W=0 Work done is zero NUMERICAL PROBLEM A student lift a school bag from the ground put it on his shoulder 1.5m above the ground .A force of 5N is acting on an object. Calculate work done by him on the school bag? SOLUTION FORCE = 5N DISPLACEMENT = 1.5m WORK DONE = F*S =5*1.5 =7.5N

  9. EXERCISE How can we calculate work done by force? What is the value of work done by force when force is acting perpendicular to displacement? What is the unit of force?  Define One Joule? A force of 7N act on an object. The displacement is say 8m in the direction of force .What is the work done in this case
