  1. THE RED LETTERS OF Luke

  2. PART 2: “Temptation Unmasked” Luke 4:1-14

  3. Luke 4:1-13 Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan River. He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry. 3 Then the devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become a loaf of bread.” 4 But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone.’” 5 Then the devil took him up and revealed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.  6 “I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them,” the devil said, “because they are mine to give to anyone I please.

  4. 7I will give it all to you if you will worship me.” 8 Jesus replied, “The Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’” 9 Then the devil took him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off!  10 For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect and guard you.11 And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’” 12 Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the Lord your God.’” 13 When the devil had finished tempting Jesus, he left him until the next opportunity came.

  5. 1. DO NOT BE SHOCKED BY TEMPTATION vs. 1-2

  6. A. The ANOINTED are tempted James 1:12-14 - God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.

  7. B. The STRONG are tempted Hebrews 4:15 - This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin.

  8. C. The FAITHFUL are tempted Galatians 5:16 - So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.

  9. 2. DO NOT BE BLINDSIDED BY TEMPTATION vs. 2-4 Mark 14:38 - Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.

  10. A. HUNGER– vs. 2 Vs. 2 - …he was tempted by the devil for forty days. Jesus ate nothing all that time and became very hungry.

  11. B. ANGER– vs. 4 Vs. 4 - But Jesus told him, “No!”

  12. C. LONELINESS– vs. 1 Vs. 1 - He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness (alone)

  13. D. TIREDNESS– vs. 2 Vs. 2 - He was led by the Spirit in the wilderness, 2 where he was tempted by the devil for forty days.

  14. Four Triggers of Temptation…

  15. 3. DO NOT BE UNPREPARED FOR TEMPTATION vs. 3-13

  16. A. Know the WORD - vs. 3-12 Hebrews 4:15 - For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. (NKJV)

  17. i. The temptation to DO IT YOURSELF vs. 3-4 • Satan’s ploy in this world is to make us believe that if we want something done we need to do it ourselves – not trust in God. Matthew 6:33 - Seek the Kingdom of Godabove all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

  18. ii. The temptation to TAKE THE EASY WAY vs. 5-8 • Satan wants us to take the easy way, the path of least resistance, and in doing so we forfeit our destiny by shutting out God’s plan and His work in our lives. Isaiah 40:29 - He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

  19. iii. The temptation toNOT BELIEVE IT UNTIL YOU SEE IT- vs. 9-13 • Satan wants to erode our faith and force us into a position where we question the character and nature of God. Mark 11:24 – I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.

  20. B. Know your ADVERSARY– vs. 13 1 Peter 5:8-11 - Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.
