Intro to Health Science We would like to introduce you to health science! • Health Science is not just science handling health issues but it is a career field in today’s world. • The occupations in health science are growing rapidly; many careers in this field are in demand of healthcare professional. • There are many different types of jobs in this field of work; however, we have got it narrowed down to three specific areas that each one of us is pursing. • Physical Therapy ,Sports Medicine, and Pharmacy.

Facts on Physical Therapy • Physical therapy is most often prescribed for patients with permanent disabilities. • Physical therapists rehabilitate people with physical disabilities • This job requires good judgment, coordination and monitoring skills • Employment of physical therapist is expected to grow by 30 percent from 2008 to 2018

Nature Of Work: Physical Therapy • Physical therapists evaluate and diagnose movement dysfunction and use interventions to treat patients on a day to day basis. • Daily activities may include: • Therapeutic exercise • Functional training • Manual therapy techniques • Assistive and adaptive devices and equipment • Physical agents and electrotherapeutic modalities

Education Requirements for PT • A post-baccalaureate degree from an accredited physical therapy program • You must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination • You must pass a jurisprudence exam (depending on the requirements of the state you are in) • Maintain a license to be able to practice physical therapy

Sports Medicine Facts • Sports medicine is the study and practice of medical principles related to the science of sports. • The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine(AMSSM) was organized in 1991 to recognize the need for the field of sports medicine that approached athletes and exercising individuals. • One of the earliest practitioners of sports medicine was the Greek physician Herodicus, who developed therapeutic diets and exercise regimes for athleticism the 5th century B.C. • The term "sports medicine" was coined in 1928, when 33 team physicians attending the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, met to establish the International Assembly on Sports Medicine.

Sports Medicine Physicians • A sports medicine physician is a specialized trainer who promotes lifelong fitness and wellness, and encourages prevention of illness and injury. • The physician is the leader of the sports medicine team, • which also includes specialty physicians and surgeons, • athletic trainers, and physical therapists. • A common misconception is that sports medicine physicians are orthopedic surgeons, the main difference between the two specialties is that sports medicine physicians focus on the non-surgical aspects of athlete care. Orthopedic surgeons focus on the surgical treatment of injuries. • The median expected salary for a typical Physician in Sports Medicine in the United States is $239,607.

Pharmacy facts • Pharmacist review prescriptions to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability. • Pharmacist also assess the identity, strength and purity of medications. • Maintain records, such as pharmacy files, patient profiles, charge system files, inventories, control records for radioactive nuclei, and registries of poisons, narcotics, and controlled drugs. • Also pharmacist provide specialized services to help patients manage conditions such as diabetes, asthma, smoking cessation, or high blood pressure.

Nature of work: Pharmacy • Pharmacists are health practitioners who specialize in dispensing drugs prescribed by physicians. • Pharmacists must understand the composition of medicines, as well as the laws that regulate their manufacture and sale. • They order and store medicines, keeping them safe, pure, and effective. • They are required by law to maintain records of the drugs they handle. • Daily activities: • Dispense medications • Answering phone calls • Face-to-face conversations • Entering work related documents into the computer. • Keep work station tidy.

Pharmacy & Education • Educational requirements: • Pharmacists must attend a college accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE). • To enter a Pharmacy degree program, Pharmacy students must take the Pharmacy College Admissions Test (PCAT). • Completing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree program usually takes about six years of education after high school.  • Some of the required college courses are: • Math • Molecular biology • Chemistry • Biology • Physics • Humanities
