  2. What are context clues? • Context – the circumstances in which something can be fully understood. • We use context clues to help determine the meanings of unfamiliar words when we encounter them in a text.

  3. Strategy One: Roots • The root of a word can help provide a clue of its origin and meaning • Find the root • Connect the meaning of that root to other words in the sentence. • Ex. Divination

  4. Strategy Two: Prefixes and Suffixes • The beginning and ends of words often hold clues to their meaning. • Ex. Antiestablishment • Ex. Happless

  5. Common Prefixes anti- against antifreeze de- opposite defrost dis-* not, opposite of disagree en-, em- cause to encode, embrace fore- before forecast in-, im- in infield in-, im-, il-, ir-* not injustice, impossible inter- between interact mid- middle midway mis- wrongly misfire non- not nonsense over- over overlook pre- before prefix re-* again return semi- half semicircle sub- under submarine super- above superstar trans- across transport un-* not unfriendly under- under undersea

Common Suffixes -able, -ible can be done comfortable -al, -ial having characteristics of personal -ed* past-tense verbs hopped -en made of wooden -er comparative higher -er, one who worker, actor -est comparative biggest -ful full of careful -ic having characteristics of linguistic -ing* verb form/ present participle running -ion, -tion, act, process occasion, attraction -ation, ition -ity, -tystate of infinity -ive, -ative, -itive adjective form of a noun plaintive -less without fearless -ly* characteristic of quickly -ment action or process enjoyment -ness state of, condition of kindness -ous, -eous, -ious possessing the qualities of joyous -s, -es* more than one books, boxes -y characterized by happy

  7. Strategy Three: Surrounding Words • Words that accompany unfamiliar words can often give a clue to what this word means. • Nouns are modified by adjectives • Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs are modified by Adverbs. • Nouns often follow prepositions

  8. Strategy Four: Substitutions using antonyms and synonyms. • Step One: Identify and roots, prefixes, or suffixes. • Step Two: Insert another word that means the same thing (synonym) in place of the suffix, prefix, or root. • Step Three: Insert a word that means the opposite (antonym) in place of the suffix, prefix, or root. • Ex. Antinationalistic
