  1. Inclined Plane • A flat, sloped surface. • Allows you to exert your input force over a longer distance. • Decreases Input force!!! • Ex: Ramp

  2. Wedge • An inclined plane that moves (thick at one end and thin at the other). • Allows you to exert your input force over a longer distance. • Decreases Input force!!! • Ex: Ax; zipper

  3. Screw • An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. • Allows you to exert your input force over a longer distance. • Decreases Input force!!! • Ex: screws, jar lids

  4. Levers • A rigid bar that is free to pivot, or rotate, on a fixed point. • Fulcrum – Fixed point the lever pivots around. • 1st class lever – Increases force and changes direction • Ex: Seesaw, pliers • 2nd class lever – Increases force • Ex: wheelbarrow • 3rd class lever – Increases distance • Ex: Hockey stick, baseball bat

  5. Wheel and Axle • Two circular objects (wheel) that rotate around a common axis (axle). • If force is applied to the wheel – Increases force • Ex: Screwdriver • If force is applied to the axle – Increases distance • Ex: Axle on a car

  6. Pulley • A grooved wheel with a rope or cable wrapped around it. • Different types: • Fixed pulley: Changes direction • Movable pulley: decreases input force • Block and tackle: (fixed and movable pulley put together) greatly decreases input force • Ex: Flagpole; crane
