  2. Summary • Multiple homicide that took place in Finland in 1960 • The Lake of Bodom is a lake by the city of Espoo • Three of four campers were murdered with a knife and blunt instrument on June 5, 1960 • The fourth victim was found wounded

  3. Victims • MailaIrmeliBjörklund: Age 15 • AnjaTuulikkiMäki: Age 15 • Seppo Antero Boisman: Age 18 • Nils Wilhelm Gustafsson: Age 18 -Survived with concussion with fractures to the jaw, facial bones, and bruises to the face.

  4. Suicide Note Theory • Hans Assmann confessed to the murders about 12 years after the disaster on his deathbed • Claimed to work on the lake and stated that he had hatred towards the campers • Thorough investigation showed that Assmann had a alibi and it was all a cover-up scheme.

  5. Professor Jorma Palo • Published a book in 2003 with his theory • Worked as a doctor at a nearby hospital • Treated Hans Assmann on the night of the murders • Believed that Assmann was not guilty

  6. Nils Gustafsson Theory • Arrested 45 years after the murders • Was sentenced to life imprisonment • Advanced examining on evidence through DNA profiling disproved Gustafsson • Was not capable of the murders with his injuries • Was released a year and a half later

  7. Nils Gustafsson Background • MailaIrmeliBjörklund’s boyfriend (Most severe injuries that lead to death) • Was a bus driver and lived a normal life until 2004 • Was released and paid over 44,000 Euros for “false arrest” • "What's done is done, I'll get 15 years."

  8. Evidence • The tent that the victims slept in was kept • The victims clothes were also kept by the police • No weapons were left behind • The only DNA that was on the scene was found within the bloodstains of the victims.

  9. Result and Impact • Murder case went down in the books as an unsolved mystery • Children of Bodom (band) was created in honor of the tragedy • Band members were also from Espoo, Finland • Dedicate at least one song from every album to the victims
