  1. WRA 150: Evolution of American thought THURSDAY, SEPT.19, 2013

  2. AGENDA • Housekeeping • Grades • Discuss • “NickiMinaj’s Curious Manhood” & “Holding it Down for Women” • Analyzing culture • Rhetorically analyzing 3 music videos • What’s next

  3. GOALS FOR TODAY • Continue working with our understanding of culture and conceptions of artifacts • To begin defining and characterizing particular cultures (in this case, hip hop culture) • To assess an artifact’s value on a macro, meso and micro level • Evaluate the rhetorical success of two pieces of writing • Use these lessons to, in the span of a class, make cultural and artifactural observations

  4. GRADES • Will be returned within one week of the due date, more than likely by sometime this weekend • Grades will be a numerical score (out of 100) • Refer to the syllabus for more info on the grading scale • REMEMBER: you can always revise • Questions?

  5. DISCLAIMER • Throughout the semester, we will be reading real, uncensored texts from a variety of cultures. These texts use strong language to discuss sensitive topics like race, sexuality, gender, class, etc. My inclusion of these texts should not be seen as support of their messages. Rather, they are sites of critical inquiry that we will engage with—and often push against. If, at any time, you’re uncomfortable, please let me know, we will figure out a way to navigate that issue together.

  6. DISCLAIMER 2 • More specifically, today (and possibly subsequent classes) we will be examining hip hop culture—I am in no way an expert on this discourse community and its associated artifacts, but it nonetheless presents a rich body of texts* to analyze and discuss in regard to culture, gender, etc. It is my hope that our discussions today help yield a stronger critical lens for you to begin wriitng your second paper. • Also, sorry if you don’t like hip hop/NickiMinaj.

  7. READINGS: NICKI MINAJ • Get in small groups and answer these questions: • What is the authors’ main argument in each piece? • Which article do you think was more convincing/better written? • Why? What particular (and specific features of the text) makes it “better?” • What is the culture being discussed in the article? How do we know? Where/how is defined in the text? • What artifact(s) is/are being discussed in relation to the culture in the text?

  8. READINGS CONT’D • Real vs fake • Mixtapesvs studio albums… • Any examples that push against the claims of the articles of male hegemony in hip hop?

  9. ANALYZING HIP HOP CULTURE • Staying on the topic of gender and hip hop, let’s look at some other representative texts and see what we can come up with. • What sorts of claims can we make about a culture and its artifacts given a narrow set of data?

  10. ACTIVITY • You have the lyrics for each song. • Take a few minutes to look over the lyrics. • I’ll play the music video. • Take notes, make observations about how gender, among other things, is constructed in the context of these cultural texts • Keep in mind how hip hop, as a culture, is talked about in our two readings for today…

  17. TO REITERATE • Today’s class was supposed to give you a deeper understanding of not just what critical thinking is but to begin doing this for your paper. • We did this by reverse engineering two articles that were essentially cultural artifact analyses (despite not being labeled as such) and analyzing 3 artifacts. • Just like the learning memoir, the cultural artifact analysis asks you to weave interpretation (the why) throughout your paper—it is not merely a description of an artifact, but an assessment of that artifacts significance, its history and its context(s).

  18. FOR NEXT CLASS • Read: • “The Rhetoric of Celebrity Cookbooks” (in Reading and Writing Literacies) • “The Merits of Meritocracy” (in Reading and Writing Literacies) • Be prepared to present to the class your idea for the cultural artifact analysis paper. • Tell us what it is and, • What culture it represents
