  2. BRAZIL - History • In the 1500’s, Brazil was colonized by Portugal (I wonder if there will be any evidence of that…) • The Portuguese killed many native peoples, but they still needed somebody to work their plantations. • Who do you think they brought over?

  3. BRAZIL-History • The Portuguese replaced the natives with _________ • Brazil remained a Portuguese colony for the next 300 years • Brazil gained independence like Canada did in 1822. • How did Canada gain independence?

  4. BRAZIL-History • From 1822 until 1889, Brazil was a monarchy. • A monarchy is ____________________________________________________________(look in your red & blue SS book) • Who is the leader of a monarchy?

  5. BRAZIL-History • From 1964-1985, Brazil was under military rule. • This means a dictator was in charge. • In 1990, Brazil had their first democratic presidential election.

  6. BRAZIL-Government • Brazil is a federal government. • The national government has much more power than the state governments. • The chief executive and head of state is a president.

  7. BRAZIL-Government • The president is elected by popular vote for a single four-year term (2 term limit). • Current president is DilmaRousseff (Brazil 1st female President)

  8. BRAZIL- Government • In Brazil you can vote when you turn 18. The crazy part about it is, you are required by LAW to vote from the ages of 18 until 70. • Is that promoting personal freedom or not?

  9. BRAZIL-People • Brazil population 199,321,413 (5th ITW) • Major ethnicities white 54%, mulatto (mixed white and black) 39%, black 6% • Why would these be the major ethnicities?

  10. BRAZIL- People • Official language is Portuguese. • Why? • Major religions are Roman Catholic 74% Protestant 15%. • Where’d those come from? • Life expectancy: 72.5 years. (male- 69 years & female- 76) 2400 ft tall Completed in 1931

  11. BRAZIL-People • 87% live in urban areas • In 1960, to encourage people to move more inland, the government of Brazil moved the capital from Rio de Janeiro to the current capital of Brasilia.
