Basis of Sumerian Religion • The gods controlled all the forces of nature and everything that could not be explained by people. • The gods also created humans to use them as servants. • If the gods were unhappy their crops would not grow and they would live unhappy lives. • Priests only knew the will of the gods.

  3. Religious practices • The built temples which were called ziggurats (Mountain of God). • Great stairways were built to the top of the ziggurats. • They believed the House of God was on the top of the ziggurat. • They believed all forces of nature were alive.They could not control these forces, so they viewed them as gods. • There were over 3,000 Sumerian Gods.

Priests • At first, Sumerian Priests were also King of the city states. • The most famous Priest King was Gilgamesh. • Priest Kings received advice from an assembly of free men. • The Priests had the power to pick one member to serve as the military leader if war broke out. • The land in Sumeria was controlled by Priests.

  5. Priest Cont. • All family members were to obey the Gods and the Priests. • Priests owned all of the schools which were only for the rich. • Priests had lost all their power by 3,000 B.C.E.

  6. Sumerian beliefs • They believed they were servants to the gods because the gods were trying to impress the goddesses. • People believed they were made from the mud of a river. • Sumerians had an elaborate burial ritual and believed in an afterlife. • They believed in an afterlife that was the “land of no return” which was dismal, gloomy place.
