  1. Research Speech Tips!

  2. Time is the Essence • 4 + minutes (use time meaningfully)

  3. Notecards • May use note cards (do not look down more than twice) • Practice, Practice, Practice!

  4. Connect with Audience • Audience= peers; May use “I” and “You”

  5. Introduction • Introduction= attention getter, connecting sentences, and thesis

  6. Body • Body= concrete details and commentary- make sure argument is present! • Keep bringing up your main argument! Use facts and ideas to support this argument

  7. Closing • Closing= Draw conclusions about each point

  8. Rebuttal • Rebuttal (1-2 statements about why someone would go against your argument) • Although many teenagers think that smoking cigarettes may make them look cool or fit in with the “in” crowd, smoking cigarettes is inhaling pollutants and chemicals that will overtime kill. You wouldn’t inhale an exhaust pipe of a car, so why suck down the smoke of a cigarette?

  9. Call to Action • Call to Action (Give your audience an action…what can they do to support your argument? • If you are offered a cigarette by a friend or peer, do not think that you have to try it to look cool and fit in with the crowd. Simply say, “No thanks,” and walk a way, or tell the person of the dangers involved with smoking.

  10. Final Statement • Final Statement about topic (be powerful) • This is what you leave the audience with at the end! Make it meaningful • Smoking cigarettes is a nasty habit that will kill you over time. Life is too short to waste these precious moments on a habit that will cause you to die. One puff is one puff closer to your grave. Think before you choose to take that first smoke!

  11. Public Speaking Tips • Be prepared! Begin April 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9! Five students randomly chosen each day • Come to class with notes/power point all ready to go!

  12. Volunteers • Volunteers accepted!

  13. Practice, Practice, Practice • You know your topic • Write out a bubble, mini outline, notecard, Power Point • Memorize as much as possible • Stand up in front of a mirror, friend, parent/guardian, family member, or even pet • Time yourself! 4 minutes!

  14. Body Language • Use hand gestures as needed • Do not play with hair, touch clothes, shuffle notes, district audience • Do not rock back and forth • You can use the space

  15. Fillers • Voice/ avoid “ummm,” “like” and “uhhh”

  16. EyeContact • LOOK AT AUDIENCE • Do not just look at one person • Do not just read your notes! • Look around the room and occasionally at notes (subtly)

  17. Content • Knowledgeable content! • Know your facts and ideas!

  18. Voice • Speak to audience • Do not read to them • Interact/connect with audience • Change your tone/voice
