  2. North Carolina Definition of AIG Students, Article 9B Academically or intellectually gifted students perform or show the potential to perform at substantially high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience or environment. Academically or intellectually gifted students exhibit high performance capability in intellectual areas, specific academic fields or in both intellectual areas and specific academic fields. Academically or intellectually gifted students require differentiated education services beyond those ordinarily provided by the regular educational program. Outstanding abilities are present in students from all cultural groups, across all economic strata and in all of human endeavor.

  3. K-2 Some services for K-2 may be provided while working on special projects periodically during the year (not on a fixed weekly schedule). In addition to directly serving identified AIG students, it is the role of the AIG teacher to collaborate, when necessary, with the regular classroom teacher to provide resource support for students who are high achievers but are not formally identified as AIG.

  4. Screening Indicators (3rd and Up) Aptitude Testing (Spring of 3rd Grade Year) EOG/Achievement Testing (Each Year) Parent, teacher, student or community referral Screening strategies should lead to a determination that a student either: • Is in need of differentiated services by the regular classroom teacher or the AIG teacher when appropriate OR • Is already in a learning environment that is appropriate.

  5. 3rd Grade and TCS Third grade students will be screened using a nationally-normed standardized aptitude test (TCS). Students scoring at or above the 86th percentile or above on this test will be reviewed for differerentiated services each year.

  6. Reconsideration for Aptitude Testing The School-Level AIG Team may reconsider any child for aptitude testing if: 1) Student scores 93% or higher on the NCEOG/Achievement test for Reading OR Mathematics AND 2) The teacher recommends and documents advanced performance. Students who qualify for reconsideration may be referred for administration or re-administration of a standardized aptitude test one year after the last administration.

  7. 3rd Grade Grades of 93 or higher on ELA and/or Math Other indicators: - DRA Level - STAR - Study Island

  8. 4th – 5th Grades There are 5 different levels of service: • Reading OR Math • Reading AND Math • AIG Elementary Curriculum “STRIDE” Only • “STRIDE” AND Reading OR Math • “STRIDE” AND Reading AND Math Once a student is identified as “Gifted” he/she will always be gifted. However, their level of service may change, based upon their need.

  9. 93%

  10. Flexible Grouping Gifted students will be grouped by area of identified gifted need. Minimum of 4 to 12 identified AIG students should be placed together in the same classroom and with a teacher that has demonstrated the ability to effectively differentiate for gifted learners. If a grade level contains fewer than 4 AIG students, then these students will be grouped together in the same instructional classroom environment.

  11. Discontinuation of AIG Service Direct service in MATH and/or READING will be discontinued if: • The score in identified area falls below level 4 on EOG testing for 2 consecutive years. • At the end of the first year, the AIG teacher will meet with the parent and the student to discuss strategies for improving performance. • The score in identified area falls below level 3 on EOG testing.

  12. Discontinuation of AIG Service AIG Elementary “STRIDE” or Middle School Curriculum service will be discontinued if: • Student does not maintain yearly average of “B” in each of the 4 core curriculum subjects. (math, reading, science, social studies) • Each = Yearly average of each separate subject, not a combined average of all 4 subjects total together. • Student does not score a level 3 on both the EOG reading and math tests.

  13. Middle School Direct Service-(Middle School Curriculum) • An average percentile score of 93% or higher on standardized aptitude testing and EOG/Achievement (Math or Reading) OR • Percentile of 93% or higher in standardized aptitude testing with a minimum of a level 3 in both Math and Reading EOG/Achievement testing

  14. Middle School Resource Support • Percentile score of 93% or higher in either Reading or Math on EOG/Achievement testing • Resource support will only be provided in the students’ identified area * Discontinuation of Services remains the same as Elementary AIG students.
