Underline every other sentence in Red • This is to show you how long (or short) your sentences are. • Do you need to work on them?
{Bracket} each beginning word in each sentence. {green} • This is to show you what words you are starting your sentences off with. • Do they repeat? Can you find better words?
llDraw two vertical lines next to anything that is your commentary.ll {Orange} • This lets you see what are your words and which words you borrowed. • Is there enough “you” in your paper? (Should be 2x research)
Circle all “to be” verbs. {Blue} (is, was, were, be, being, been, am, are) • This is to show you what verb choices you are using. • Could you use an action verb? Is there something that would be more active?
Put “it” in a triangle. {Yellow} • Is “it” clear enough to your reader? • Could you replace “it” with a better word?
Make a wavy line under repeated words. {Purple} • This shows you words that might become overused. • Can you say it a different way? Could you use an appropriate pronoun?
Mark words that might be imprecise with a check. {Brown} • This might mean you are unsure of the spelling or meaning • Double check the word and fix if necessary.
“X” out the word “very” and other “bad” words. {Black} • Use your words. Do not be generic. Can you expand your reader’s grasp on the concept by using a better word? • Replace with a better word.
