  3. Let’s take a look… compile the capital words! I would have accepted without question the information that Gatsby sprang from the swamps of Louisiana or from the lower East Side of New York. That was comprehensible. But young men didn’t- at least in my provincial inexperience I believed they didn’t- drift coolly out of nowhere and buy a palace on Long Island Sound. “Anyhow he gives large parties,” said Jordan, changing the subject with an urban distaste for the concrete. “And I like large parties.   4. Let’s find our own! • Remember the list of capitalized words that we found in my excerpt from The Great Gatsby??? • I want you to do the same with your SSR book. Reread a few pages and find at least 5 words that are capitalized (NOT THE 1st WORDS OF THE SENTENCES). You have about 5 minutes.

  5. Groups • As a group, think of categories you can compile you stinky notes in (Ex: Gatsby=someone’s name) • You have about 3 minutes.

  6. Share… • I will share mine first, then we will bring every group’s together!!!

  7. Group Time!! Let’s put our heads together! • (286-287 we will do together) • Task Managers: get out a sheet of paper and keep everyone on task! • Supply person: you will write the summary • Writer: you write the key points • Reader: You read the page to your group • EVERYONE: will discuss what the writer will write to represent your group’s key points

  8. Write key points for these pages • Group 1: 288 and 295 • Group 2: 289 and 291 • Group 3: 290 and 294 • Group 4: 291 and 290 • Group 5: 292 and 293 • Group 6: 293 and 288 • Group 7: 294 and 289 • We will share when you are finished

  9. Write the best summary!! • Compose a summary of the story underneath your key points within your group using what we’ve built as a class. I’m not giving a limit, but it needs to be an EFFECTIVE summary. • Supply person will write!

  10. THEME- What is theme? What do you think the theme is in “The All-American Slurp”? • Use pg. 107 in Reader’s Notebook for help! 1) Each person will have a sticky note and decide what you think the best theme is based on evidence from the text. 2) You will each place your sticky note in a corner of your paper. 3) The task manager will write down what your group agrees on for the best theme in the middle of the paper.
