  2. What year is it? • 1900-1910 • 1910-1920 • 1920-1930 • 1930-1940 • 1940-1950 • 1950-1960 • 1960-1970 • 1970-1980 • 1980-1990 • 1990-2000 • 2000-2010

  3. 1900-1910 • In 1901 a vocational school was established (this is an education where they deal with technology), while in 1909 an HBS school started. • Printing office ‘Vrijdag’ was established in 1905 by Chris Schafer and Louis Vrijdag. In 1910 the company had employed only 6 people. But later it became one of the biggest, independent printing offices of the Netherlands.

  4. 1910-1920 • The connection of Eindhoven with Weert was ready in 1913. • In 1917 and 1918 followed the Sint-Joris-college and the Sint-catharinalyceum. We now know Eindhoven for its high technology. • The Philips company wanted more and better high skilled employees and even scientists. In 1914 (to keep the scientists and physicists from having thoughts of leaving) the company designed a High-Tec laboratory; the Natlab. Philips even wanted to provide Professors for Universities. • The football club PSV was established in 1913.

  5. 1920-1930 • In 1920 Eindhoven became much bigger It got a bigger area, from 75 until 6300 ha. But also the number of inhabitants grew from 6500 till 46000 people. This was because Eindhoven addedotherneighborhoods. • In 1923 the symbol of Eindhoven was officially acknowledged. The weapon of Eindhoven shows a shield with a lion, 3 horns and a crown. The lion, is a symbol of courage and the sign of the duke of Brabant and his power. The 3 horns were used by the family van Horne this were the first owners of Eindhoven. The crown was added in the 17th century, it’s a crown that was usually worn by a Duke.

  6. 1930-1940 • In 1932 the aerodrome was opened. Better known under the name: Welschap. It was provided by the government for the employment. • There were a couple of hospitals founded: Sint Joseph Hospital, just as the Maxima Medical Centre. • In the year 1934 the 100.000nd inhabitant was born. His name was Jan Antoon Dekkers

  7. 1940-1950 • On the 12th of May Eindhoven was occupied by the Germans. And in 1941 all the unemployed people had to go to Germany to work there. The Jewish employees were fired. Company Philips made war products for Germany, they employed Jews. This made the Jews indispensible, so Phillips actually helped the Jews. However some Jews were still exported to concentration camps. • In 1941 Philips celebrated that it existed for 50 years. A lot of secret radio’s left Philips. • One year later, in 1942 the English air force bombarded the Philips companies, 136 people died. • On the 18th of September in 1944 Eindhoven was liberated.

  8. 1950-1960 • In 1954 the 150.000nd inhabitant was born. Her name was Josje Busio. • In 1955 the Academy for Industrial design was set up, where technique and design were brought together.

  9. 1960-1970 • 1966 The Evoluon was built because Philips existed 75 years. The building was shaped as a UFO. The first idea was to show Philips products, but later it became a museum about science and technology. But now it’s not a museum anymore.

  10. 1970-1980 • PSV the football club from Eindhoven won the UEFA cup in the finale against France in 1978. • There was a crisis between 1970-1980. Because of this 20% of the inhabitants of Eindhoven had no work.

  11. 1980-1990 • In 1982 Eindhoven existed for 750 years, this was celebrated greatly. • The unemployment of the people got less around 1990.

  12. 1990-2000 • In 1999 the 200.000 inhabitant was born. His name was Lucas van Bergeijk. • On this moment Eindhoven is the biggest city of South-Netherlands.

  13. 2000-2010 • Printing office ‘ Vrijdag’ grew very big. It now has 120 employees in 2005. Now they celebrate their 100 year existance. • Eindhoven has become a large city by now, it counts 214.036 inhabitants.
