  2. NATO Questions • When was NATO formed? • 1949, a few years after World War II • What was the original purpose of NATO? • To defend against communism and the Soviet Union’s Warsaw Pact alliance • What countries are members of NATO today? • The U.S., Canada, and 26 European countries

  3. NATO Questions • What is NATO’s purpose today? • To come to members’ defense in the event of an attack • In the last few decades, what are some conflicts in which NATO has participated? • Yugoslavian Wars (Serbia and Bosnia) • War on Terror in Afghanistan • Iraq War (at the start)

  4. Scenario • Terrorists have just attacked key transportation routes in London, England. • These were a series of coordinated suicide attacks conducted by British citizens. All of the terrorists were Islamic extremists and home-grown, born and raised in the United Kingdom.

  5. Scenario • Four bombs were detonated this morning during the commute most Londoners take each day. Three of the bombs were detonated on London’s Underground subway system. A fourth bomb was detonated on one of the famous double-decker red buses. • Fifty-two people were killed in all with more than 700 people injured. The bombings were carried out by hiding explosive materials in backpacks and then detonating the material on the buses or trains.

  6. Scenario • The four terrorists who committed the crime were educated and instructed by radical Muslims in countries like Yemen who are set on destroying the Western World.

  7. Scenario • The international community, specifically NATO, have been called upon to help. • NATO has taken into consideration whether to attack specific havens for radical Islam in Yemen who educated the London bombers.

  8. Directions • 1. Decide what action your country will take to aid the United Kingdom, one of your allies in NATO, or if you’ll do nothing. • 2. Be prepared to share a 30-second response from your country on the situation. In your response: • A. State your opinion of the attack in a professional manner. • B. State what action your country will take with regard to the attacks. • C. State why you have chosen to take this action. • D. Cast your vote for military intervention or not.
