  1. Worry Matthew 6:25-34

  2. Definition of Worry • Noun - A state of anxiety and uncertainty over actual or potential problems • Verb – To give way to anxiety or unease; allow one's mind to dwell on difficulty or troubles • Mentally upset over possible misfortune or danger, etc • Concerned, anxious, troubled, or uneasy • From the New Testament Greek word “merimna” – a divided mind

  3. Concern - Worry – Anxiety • Concern - have an interest in, give attention to, be engaged by a situation, as a matter of consideration or responsibility • Worry - a disquieted uneasiness of mind, an anxious apprehension concerning an impending or anticipated situation • Anxiety – an abnormal, overwhelming apprehension; anguished uncertainty and self-doubt about one's ability to cope with the situation, to the point of becoming distressed, distraught, panicky or tormented.

  4. Concern - Worry – Anxiety • For the Christian – concern becomes worry when we fail to relate the situation that confronts us to the source of sufficiency in God. • To worry is to assume a responsibility that is not necessarily ours to assume • Failing to recognize that... God knows our problems God is bigger than any problem God loves us enough to seek our highest good in the midst of every situation.

  5. Worry and Fear • Worry & Fear go hand in hand • Fear is at the root of worry • We worry because we are afraid of what might happen! • Worry and Fear are the opposite of faith! • Failure to trust God • Worry is SIN – Phil 4:6 Do not worry (be anxious) about anything

  6. The Things We Worry About • 40% - things that will never happen • 30% - the past - can’t be changed • 12% - criticism by others – mostly untrue • 10% - about health – worry, stress makes it worse • 8% - about real problems that we have to face

  7. What We Worry About • Daily Provision • Job • Future • Health - Sickness, Dying • Marriage • Children... salvation, school, driving, mates, relationships, vocation • Family, friends...their problems • Finances, interest rates, stock-markets, retirement • What others think of us

  8. Life’s Troubles • Matt 6:34 - Each day has enough trouble of its own. • Psalm 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous,But the LORD delivers him out of them all • 2 Timothy 3:12 Yes, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

  9. Life’s Troubles – To Help us Grow • James 1:2-4 My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. • Romans 5:3-5 And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, character; and character, hope.5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

  10. Life’s Troubles – To Correct Us • Proverbs 3:11-12 My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor detest His correction; 12 For whom the LORD loves He corrects, just as a father the son in whom he delights • Demonstrates His love as our Father

  11. Life’s Troubles – To Extend His Grace • 1 Cor. 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. • God knows how much we can take • His grace is sufficient

  12. God’s Sufficient Grace • Paul - 2 Cor. 12:7-9 And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure. 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

  13. Worry as a Thief • Quote: “Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.”  - Leo Buscaglia • John 10:10 The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I (Jesus) have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. • Satan wants to steal our joy, our peace, our ability to serve God, to destroy our testimony

  14. It’s our Choice! • Quote: “I keep the telephone of my mind open to peace, harmony, health, love and abundance. Then, whenever doubt, anxiety or fear try to call me, they keep getting a busy signal - and soon they'll forget my number.”  ~Edith Armstrong • Worry changes nothing for the good • Matt 6:27 - Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? • It’s a choice we make – NOT to worry!

  15. World’s Remedy for Worry • Don't worry! It's a waste of time - think positive! • Don't worry! Get control of yourself - you're in charge! • Don't worry! Buy enough insurance • Don't worry! Be happy - laugh your troubles away! • Don't worry! Get busy, be active! It'll take your mind off the trouble! • Don't worry! Have another drink, another hit, or pill • Don't worry! Go see your therapist • Don't worry! This is the "cross" you have to bear

  16. God’s Remedy for Worry • Matt 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. • Acknowledge God in every area of our lives • Give Jesus first place always! • Seek to live according to His Word, - His righteousness

  17. God’s Remedy for Worry • Quote: Hudson Taylor (missionary to China) "Let us give up our work, our plans, ourselves, our lives, our loved ones, our influence, our ALL, into God's hand; and then, when we have given ALL over to Him, there will be nothing left for us to be troubled about.“ • 1 Peter 5:7 Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you • Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the LORD,and He shall sustain you

  18. God’s Remedy for Worry • Phil 4:6-7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. • Don’t worry • Pray ... Ask in faith, trusting (Prov. 3:5-6) • Be thankful • Experience His peace!
