  1. How We Use Land and Public Land Chapter 8.2 & 8.3

  2. Harvesting Trees • 18 cubic meter per day are cut down • Deforestation- clearing trees without replacing them • Clear cutting- removing all trees • Selective cutting- clearing only middle aged or mature trees

  3. Effects of Deforestation • Stripping of trees leaves loose soil. • Building of roads for selective cutting also leaves loose soil. • Loose soil erodes through wind and water causing a total loss of fertile soil. • This makes growing anything on a carelessly cut plot of land difficult to grow.

  4. Deforestation in the Amazon

  5. Reforestation Replacing trees that have died or been cut down.

  6. Ranching • Using rangelands to support cattle, sheep and goats. • Overgrazing- Too many animals graze for too long • Can lead to desertification

  7. Solution to Overgrazing • Cattle rotation – move cattle from one field to another to avoid stripping the vegetation. • Grazing Management • Limit size of herds • Eliminate weeds. • Digging many small watering holes to avoid overgrazing in one area.

  8. Mining Mineral resources- minerals useful to humans Open pit mining- dig large hole and remove ore(mineral containing rock) Strip Mining- clear large strips of land Shaft Mining – drill holes vertically then horizontally.

  9. Mining effects • Scratches on land surface • Piles of waste • Chemical waste Solution: • Reclamation- restore land after mining is completed.

  10. Mine Runoff Rivers and streams can be contaminated with cyanide and acids used or unearthed in the mining process.

  11. Public Land use in The USA 1872 Ulysses S Grant set aside the land that would become Yellowstone National Park Now there are 55 national parks 40% of US land is Publicly owned

  12. Types of Public Land National Parks and Monuments National Wildlife Refugees National Resource Lands National Forests Indian Reservations and Military Installations

  13. Wilderness Areas protected from development
