  1. Goals for today 1. Create a plan for implementing tiers 1,2,and 3 2. Define and identify accommodations and interventions 3. Determine how you will establish a database of interventions 4. Evaluate and refine your procedures of solving academic and behavior problems with students

  2. Essential Questions • How can improving teaching strategies enhance student achievement? • What does effective tier one and tier two look like at the secondary level? • What is the relationship between differentiation and RTI? • How can you develop a deep database of research-based interventions in your school?

  3. An Effective Research-Based Strategy • Provides organization, rules and procedures. • Builds positive relationships • Gets all students actively engaged • Develops deep thinking skills • Helps students master content • Is rooted in sound learning theory • Improves teaching, learning and achievement

  4. The sooner you get learners engaged the better they do. No engagement --- no learning.

  5. Inductive learning gives student the power to figure out their world. It is required by the for all grade levels

  6. Effective Vocabulary Development • Connects with new words • Organizes words into meaningful categories • Deep processing of words • Exercises the words through elaborative rehearsal

  7. Examine the Vocabulary

  8. Phase Two – Group the data and label the categories Phase Three – Interpret the information Based upon your groupings what do you believe to be the three most important issues of RTI implementation

  9. Phase Four: Synthesizing“Implementing RTI will have a positive effect on student achievement” Do you agree or disagree? Explain. A Phase Five: Evaluating the Lesson How will improving assessments, teaching strategies and differentiation in the classroom affect student achievement? A

  10. Inductive Reasoning Strategy • Put the vocabulary words into categories of your choice. • Make three key statements about what you think RTI implementation must address to be successful. (Hypothesis) • Now read to verify or refute your claims based upon evidence from the text. • Write for three minutes about what you believe your team should address this year in your school.

  11. Memory Box Strategy(Research-based review tool) • Without looking at your notes, list what you can remember from today’s session. (Do this step alone)

  12. Memory Box Strategy(Research-based review tool) • List things you didto help yourself recall this information.

  13. Memory Box Strategy(Research-based review tool) • Share with a partner and add to your list. • Find someone from another table to compete with. You get a point for every correct item that is not on their list.

  14. Memory box • Argue the point back at your table about which idea from your memory box is the most powerful one for your team to focus on for the rest of this year.

  15. Memory Box • This helps students take notes instead of copy notes. • Effective learners reorganize and rewrite their notes. • Making notes before writing or making a decision improves the quality of the product. • The memory box activity sequence provides multiple practices with enough variety to keep engagement high. • Research results over six weeks: • Low sores went from 60 – 80 • Average scores went from 80 – 90 • High scores went from 90 - 93 Harvey Silver and Tom Dewing

  16. Memory Box • This helps students who were absent or those who have memory problems. • As you review the key points selected by the group point out things that are likely to be on the test. • Some teachers allow students to use their memory box during the test. • Generates the excitement of competition without resulting in total losers.
