  2. Energy • The ability to do work • All biological processes require energy • Energy is gained by the food an organism eats

  3. Energy Use • A cell can not use all available energy at once • Some is stored as ATP (adenosine triphosphate)

ADP and ATP • Cells make ATP by adding a phosphate group to ADP (Adenosine diphosphate) • When the phosphate to phosphate bonds are created energy is stored • When a phosphate group breaks off ATP becomes ADP and energy is released • The ADP then again bond with another phosphate group to store more energy as ATP • Energy is stored in phosphate to phosphate bonds

  6. What do you think • What would happen if ADP lost a phosphate group? • It would give off energy become AMP awaiting either gaining a phosphate group or losing it last remaining one

  7. Types of Energy • Available energy (energy that can be used right away) is called free energy • Energy that is stored is potential energy
