Why is this significant? • Setting: • Place: Mexican coastal village (La Paz) probably on the Baja Peninsula • Time: unclear – maybe late 1800s/early 1900’s? • El Paz – the peace • Significance – initially, Kino and his family’s life is peaceful Chapter 1

  14. 7. On page 14, how do Kino’s people feel about sight? • Vision cannot be trusted to reveal the truth (“don’t believe your eyes”) • People put stock in spirit and imagination to see Chapter 2

Why is the canoe so important to Kino? • The natives (like Kino) depend on these canoes for survival – pearl diving • Handed down from generation to generation – symbol of ancestors • Source of food and income (pearls) • Kino (and other natives) take excellent care of their canoes Chapter 2

Find a quote for support. • All look for how they can benefit financically • Priest wonders whether Kino’s baby has been baptized  he can get $ from Kino • Shopkeepers imagine Kino buying clothing • Doctor grows stern and says that Kino is a client – he is treating his child – LIE – the doctor imagines himself in Paris opening a bottle of wine • “stirred up evil in the town”; “like hunger in the smell of food” Chapter 3

  22. 15. Power: Where does the Pearl’s power come from? • How much others want it – GREED • Will this anger God? Is Kino trying to change “the way things are” • “God keep us from such things. Yes, God punished Kino because he rebelled against the way things are” (Steinbeck 26). • Putting too much faith in the pearl Chapter 3

  23. 16. Look at page 30. How is Kino a victim of his own ignorance? • Kino is at the mercy of the educated doctor; trapped by ignorance • Doctor returns and says Coyotito may not be out of the woods • The doctor gives Coyotito “medicine” • Doctor taking advantage of the “weak” Chapter 3

  24. 17. Why is it important that Coyotito goes to school? • So he won’t be a victim of ignorance • Prey to predators who are much larger (or smarter) • And the night mice crept about on the ground and the little night hawks hunted them silently” (Steinbeck 33). Chapter 3
