  6. Themes • Wisdom and knowledge can be gained from a tragic experience • The rich and powerful usually dominate the poor and uneducated • Greed is dehumanizing • Goodness and love usually triumph over evil and selfishness

  7. Symbols • The pearl • The canoe • The songs • The night • Kino smashing his knuckles on the door of the doctor’s residence is a symbol of his rage over the injustice of oppression.

  8. Allegory • A literary work in which the characters represent intangible qualities such as virtues and vices. • Kino represents dangers of ambition and greed • Juana represents domestic happiness • The doctor represents the colonial attitudes that oppress Kino’s culture • The pearl buyers represent deceit from collusion • The trackers represent violence and corruption

  9. Suspense • Kino decides to reject the pearl buyer’s offers • Kino murders his attacker • Kino decides to flee from the trackers • Kino’s climb down the mountainside to kill the trackers

  10. Figurative Language • Animal Imagery • Using qualities of an animal to describe a character • Similes – a comparison between two unlike things using like, as, than, or resembles • Metaphors – a comparison between two unlike things where the one thing becomes the other thing • Personification – giving human qualities to a nonhuman thing

  11. Irony • When the reader expects one thing and the opposite occurs. • Coyotito is killed when the tracker shoots him, thinking his cry is the cry of a coyote pup. • His death represents a terrible loss, a consequence of greed, the evil the pearl brings to Kino, and a grim irony of the story.
