  9. Suspense • Kino decides to reject the pearl buyer’s offers • Kino murders his attacker • Kino decides to flee from the trackers • Kino’s climb down the mountainside to kill the trackers

Figurative Language • Animal Imagery • Using qualities of an animal to describe a character • Similes – a comparison between two unlike things using like, as, than, or resembles • Metaphors – a comparison between two unlike things where the one thing becomes the other thing • Personification – giving human qualities to a nonhuman thing

  11. Irony • When the reader expects one thing and the opposite occurs. • Coyotito is killed when the tracker shoots him, thinking his cry is the cry of a coyote pup. • His death represents a terrible loss, a consequence of greed, the evil the pearl brings to Kino, and a grim irony of the story.
