  2. How do I use capitals in names, dates, and addresses? Let’s watch a clip…

  3. You already know that ALL sentences begin with a capital letter. This lesson will help you understand when else to use capital letters. It deals with the following topics: Titles Addresses Overview >Names • Dates

  4. Names and Titles • Capitalize the specific names of people, places, and institutions • Tommy Brown, Westside Park, Warner College • But not general references • librarian, zoo, school • Capitalize titles that precede names • Mrs. Smith, Aunt Susan, Major Harper • But not when used alone, or after names • The major was ready for the battle. • Bill, my uncle, sat beside Gary Davis, principal of our school.

  5. Dates and Directions • Capitalize days of the week, months, holidays • Monday, June, Thanksgiving • But not seasons • summer, fall, winter • Don’t capitalize directions • I drove north for two blocks. • Unless it refers to a specific location • Fighting broke out in the Middle East. • Winter roads are common in the North.

  6. Addresses • Capitalize the name of the road or street in an address. 1062 Palm Drive • Capitalize words like street, road, avenue, and lane when used in an address. • Do not capitalize those words when used in a sentence. I live on a busy street. • Capitalize the city and the state listed in the address. Gainesville, Florida
