St. Thomas School History • Founded by the Sisters of Divine Providence in 1903 • Building expansions includes a high school, an addition to the elementary school • Closing of the High School in 1976 • Elementary takes over the high school and the daycare rents the old elementary building • Preschool opens to help with enrollment • Accreditation starting in with recertification in 1999, 2003 and we will go through certification again in 2008-09 school year • Earned a 2006 National Blue Ribbon Award from the Federal Department of Education

Since 1999 we have: • Developed our own P.E. program instead of S.H.A.P.E. • Added Art to the curriculum • Added Spanish to the curriculum • Started 8th grade class plays • Developed community partnerships with • Fifth Third Bank our B.E.S.T. partners • Carmel Manor (students visit residents during the year) • Northern Kentucky Health Department (grants and programs) • Greater Cincinnati Foundation (grants) • Kentucky Arts Council (grants) • Children Inc. (service learning)

Initiated split classes in reading (phonics) and math in kindergarten to fifth grade • Participated in District and Regional Governor’s Cup competition with numerous individual placing at state level and our quick recall team making it to state competition twice in eight years. • Earned the National Blue Ribbon Award in 2006

Catholic Identity • Yearly focus in religious in nature; This year’s goal focuses on ways that we can be one voice for God in our school, parish, community and the world. • Beginning on the third year of the Fatima Program • Service Learning to show that service is part of our Catholic faith formation • Religious Observances • Weekly Mass • Daily rosary for the primary students • Sacrament preparation for grades 2 and 8 • Sacramental retreats for both grades to build unity with PREP students also making the sacraments • Weekly Advent Prayer Services • Reenactment of the Nativity by the 2nd graders • Bi-Weekly Stations of the Cross during Lent • Living Stations reenacted by the 8th graders for the school and parish • May Crowning with school and parish

Collections for the needy at Thanksgiving and Christmas • Parent Newsletters on the Catholic Faith in weekly family folder • Catholic Book of Prayers went home to parents in 2006-2007 • Saint Icons outside classrooms (including PREP) accompanied by a brief biography of the saint • Student Rosary Club that meets monthly from October to May

Looking Forward • Smart boards for more classrooms • Wireless Internet so that class sets of laptops could be used in the school • More connections between the PREP classes and the school classes • Initiate grants to bring Arts into the school • Keyless entry system for the safety of the students

Financial Resources • Parish subsidy per student: approximately $2,000 • Boosters and Mother’s Club support per student: $250-300 • Parishioners can petition the parish for Parish Scholarships (up to 50% off tuition). This is based on financial need. • P.O.S.T. program: parents can work concessions at Reds and Bengal games and the money earned goes toward their tuition bill.

  32. Challenges Faced by the School • Keeping the programs that will allow us to be competitive with the Ft. Thomas Public School System which is ranked 1st in the state • Keep tuition from rising which will make Catholic education impossible except for the wealthy • Decreased enrollment due to rising tuition • Older facilities
