    2. Autism Spectrum Disorders are not: The result of emotional deprivation or emotional stress. A withdrawal into a fantasy life. A wish to avoid social contact. Due to parental rejection or cold, ‘refrigerator’ parents. Middle-class disorders. Mental illnesses - not schizophrenia. Genius; some do have special skills. A new phenomenon - described earlier than the 18th Century. Curable.

    3. Autism Spectrum Disorders are: Developmental disorders caused by biological/physiological or organic/biochemical defects or deficits in the functioning of the brain. Apparently more common in boys; possibly 4:1 but this may in part be due to diagnostic anomalies. Often associated with learning difficulties, specific (such as dyslexia) or otherwise. Associated with diseases or illnesses including maternal rubella, encephalitis and tuberous sclerosis and many other ‘triggers’. There is no evidence that the MMR vaccine has increased the incidence of ASD. Sometimes associated with epilepsy. Often genetically linked. Life-long disabilities; many do not become fully independent. More common than previously thought; latest NAS survey suggests that 1 in 86 may be affected (1 in 80 age 5-11).

    18. And finally…. Try to enter the child’s/parent’s world sometimes rather than trying to make the child/parent constantly be part of the ‘everyday’ world.
