  1. Covenant Lesson 7

  2. Abraham and his descendants • Genesis 12:2 Promise of a great nation • Genesis 15:4 Abram’s heir would be one coming from his own body, not his servant Eliezar • Genesis 17 Abram is 99 and his name is changed to Abraham. Sarah’s name is also changed • God gave him the sign of circumcision • Promise of the land • Abraham obeyed immediately • Genesis 18:10-14 The time is now given for the birth of his son. • Is anything too hard for the Lord?

  3. Abraham and his descendants • Genesis 21:1-5,12 Promise is fulfilled when Abraham is 100 and Sarah is 90 • Abraham’s descendants were through Isaac’s line NOT Ishmael’s. • The covenant promises applied only to Isaac and his descendants • Genesis 22:1-19 God told Abraham to offer Isaac • Abraham’s response: complete, obedience • Heb. 11:17-19 Abraham knew that God would have to resurrect Isaac because of the promises • Abraham witnessed life from the dead in Sarah’s womb

  4. Exodus 4:18-26 • The Lord was about to kill Moses, a descendant of Abraham, for breaking Covenant • Moses was about to put to death the firstborn sons of all Egypt • Moses knew the consequences of breaking Covenant, yet, he did not circumcise his sons

  5. Jonathan, David and their descendants • I Samuel 16 Samuel is to anoint David as next king • Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart. • An evil spirit from the Lord tormented Saul • I Samuel 18-20 Covenant based on Love • Saul became David’s continual enemy • I Samuel 20:12-17, 42 David and Jonathan’s descendants were included in the covenant • I Samuel 22, 24, 25, 27:1-4 David recognized Saul as God’s anointed one and would not kill him • It was not David’s responsibility to remove him, it was God’s

  6. I Samuel 31 and 2 Samuel 1 • Saul and Jonathan were killed in battle • An Amalekite brought David news of Saul’s death • David had the Amalekite killed • In 2 Samuel 1 the man claiming to have killed Saul was lying, wanting to gain blessing from David • 2 Sam. 2:1-11 David showed kindness to the men who had buried Saul • Divided Kingdom: David ruled and Ish-bosheth ruled.

  7. 2 Samuel • 2 Samuel 3:1 Long war between the two houses, yet David’s house grew stronger and stronger • 2 Samuel 4:1, 5-12 Ish-bosheth murdered by Recab and Baanah and his head brought to David. • David has both of them put to death for killing a righteous man • 2 Samuel 5:1-5, 9-12 David made a covenant with the elders of Israel and reigned as king for 33 years • David was faithful to Covenant

  8. 2 Samuel 9 Mephibosheth • Jonathan’s Son • Crippled in both feet at the age of five • Lived in Lo-debar where David sought him out • David restored the land and all that belonged to Saul and his house to Mephibosheth. • David showed kindness to him and made him eat at the king’s table, always. • Ziba and his servants were told to farm HIS land and bring in the crops for him so that he would be provided for: no welfare, just commitment to Covenant. This gave him dignity • Still crippled, but at the king’s table.

  9. Application • How are YOU like Mephibosheth? • Where do YOU sit? • Who feeds YOU? • Whose table do YOU sit at? • Is Covenant serious? Deadly serious. • How serious do YOU take it?
