Important concepts • The knowledgeable person will make informed choices • Knowledge is best gained at a pace, in a place and to a depth that is comfortable and controlled by the person, not the doctor • The internet can bring knowledge on demand to the person in their own home. • Put the controls in the hands of the person.

  3. What Knowledge is Best? • Knowledge needs to be customized for the person, avoiding ‘content overload’ • Knowledge needs to be contemporary and relevant to the person’s needs • Knowledge needs to be authoritative - “can we believe it?”

  4. When is knowledge needed? Our research shows that individuals with arthritis need information when: • They are first diagnosed with arthritis • When a new treatment becomes available • When they are contemplating surgery

  7. Content and formatting • Derived from a 12 year partnership with the Arthritis Foundation • Especially Arthritis Answers Hotline • And listening to patients with arthritis
