SRB Flight Camera Capabilities

The SRB project has integrated an 8mm recorder system for main parachute deployment since STS-77. Utilizing the Supercircuits PC-17YC NTSC 2 lux camera, video footage captures external tank intertank foam loss with the camera mounted inside the SRB Forward Skirts. From STS-95 through STS-114, SRB has identified potential camera mounting locations to observe vehicle return flights. Optimization of camera selection, locations, and angles is undertaken to support program requirements, focusing on debris tracking and impact assessment during critical phases of flight.

SRB Flight Camera Capabilities • The SRB Project has flown a 8mm Recorder System for main parachute deployment since STS-77 • Supercircuits PC-17YC / NTSC / 2 lux / 450 line Camera • System utilized to provide video of External Tank Intertank foam loss with camera mounted in side of SRB Forward Skirts • STS 95L, 96, 93, 103 and 101 starting in October 1998. • SRB has identified possible locations for mounting cameras to view the Vehicle on Return to Flights • Forward Skirt (STS-114 and subs) • ET Attach Ring (flight effectivity under review) • Camera selection, locations and viewing angles to be optimized based on Program requirements • Tailored for debris tracking or impact assessment Direction of Flight View of ET Intertank from SRB Forward Skirt location (taken during STS-95) Direction of Flight Potential View of Orbiter from SRB’s ET Attach Ring location
