  1. Supplemental Referee Training A Step-by-Step Guide to Successfully Accepting or Declining Games

  2. All referee assignments are done through the WBA website. This season, we are making 132 assignments weekly. So it is important that everyone knows what his or her level of responsibility is relative to successfully accepting or declining assignments. This step-by-step guide will show you how to do exactly that.

  3. When an assignment is made, you will receive two simultaneous notifications, text and email. As a general rule, text messages sent from the websitetx@LeagueAthletics.com are informational only. Do not reply – no one will receive them. Email is the tool that the website uses for functionality. We understand that while you have email, you might not check it very often. During WBA season, you need to. We prefer to communicate with you, not your parents, directly. Step 1: Text Message The text message looks like this. This message is informational only. It’s purpose is twofold: 1) to let you know you got an assignment and 2) to let you know you now need to check your email If you are NOT getting text messages, go to STEP 1A. If you are getting text messages, go to STEP 2

  4. There are several reasons why you might not be getting text messages. • Step 1A: • Go to the WBA website and log onto your profile • Make sure your profile matches this one • When you have made those changes, hit “SUBMIT” • You should now be all set to receive text messages • Go to Step 2 This should be your cell phone number Make sure this says “public” Find your provider on the drop down list

  5. It is important to note that school email addresses, “xxxx@wspstudent.org” do NOT work. The school server has settings that do not allow emails to come into the school from an outside organization. Step 2: Email Message The email message looks like this. It has the functionality in it for you to click one of the buttons. This is how you need to “accept” or “decline” the assignment. It is the ONLY way we know whether you are taking the game or not. If you are NOT getting email messages, go to STEP 2A. If you are getting email messages, go to STEP 3

  6. There are several reasons why you might not be getting email messages. • Step 2A: • Go to the WBA website and log onto your profile • Make sure your profile matches this one • When you have made those changes, hit “SUBMIT” • You should now be all set to receive email messages • Go to Step 3 This should be your email address Make sure this says “public” Make sure this is unchecked

  7. Step 3 When you have successfully clicked “Accept” or “Decline”, you will get one of the following confirmation pop ups on your screen. If you do not get one of these two pop ups, your pick did not go through. Do it again. Not responding to the email, i.e., not clicking either, is NOT an option. Failure to tell us one way or another could result in your removal from the eligible ref list. It will be then up to you to explain to your parents why you are not getting games. You Accepted You Declined

  8. If you accepted, you will then get a series of reminders throughout the week. If you declined because you have a time conflict, you can email (jmenjivar76@verizon.net) or text (781-258-2086) Jorge Menjivar and he will try to get you a game in a different time slot if one becomes available. Otherwise, you are done for the week. Step 4: Reminders The reminder emails look like this. This message is informational only. It’s purpose is to simply remind you where you need to be and when. You might also get text reminders. Again, do not reply to these – they do not go to a live person. Wakefield Basketball Association Devin This is a reminder that on Saturday, 12/1/2018 at 2:00 PM you are scheduled as Referee for the Game between Boys 3rd and 4th Grade>10 – Preston vs. and 1- Campbell at: WHS 160 Farm StreetWakefield, MA 01880Please do not reply to this email. It was sent by an automated process by the LeagueAthletics.com website on behalf of Wakefield Basketball Association. Replies to this process will not be read. Please contact this club's scheduler directly.

  9. Once you accept a game, you own it. That means you CANNOT go into the system later in the week and decline that same game. We do not get notified that there has been a change so we do not know that we will be short a referee until it is too late to find a replacement. No Shows could also result in your removal from the eligible ref list. It will be up to you to explain to your parents why you are not getting games. We also understand that stuff happens – coaches call last minute practice, you have an appointment you did not know about, etc. In that case, follow the steps below. • Step 5: • Try to find someone to take your game for you. This person has to be on the current eligible referee list. • If you are a freshman, it has to be a freshman • If you are an upper classman, it has to be an upperclassman. Freshman referees are not eligible to ref grades 3-8. • As last resort, if you truly cannot find a replacement, call or text Jorge Menjivar. (781-258-2086).

  10. If you have any questions about the information in this training, please reach out to Jorge Menjivar, Referee Coordinator at jmenjivar76@verizon.net or 781-258-2086. Thank you!
