  2. Ra • Ra - Sun God, King of the Gods (a falcon crowned with a sun disk or a man with a falcon's head) • Ra was the God of the Sun. He sailed across the heavens in a boat called the 'Braque of Millions of Years'. At the end of each day Ra was thought to die and sailed on his night voyage through the Underworld, leaving the Moon to light the world above. The boat would sail through the twelve doors, representing the twelve hours of night-time. The next dawn, he was born again.

  3. Osiris • Osiris - God of the Dead (dressed in white with crook and flail and white crown) • Osiris is shown as a man with a beard wearing white mummy wrappings. His crown is the white crown of Upper Egypt surrounded by red feathers. His skin is green to represent vegetation. He holds the symbols of supreme power, the flail and crook. The crook is used by shepherds to catch their sheep. The flail is used in threshing, to separate the grains from the outer husks.

  4. Isis • Isis - Queen of Goddess (with a throne or sun disk and horns on her head) • Isis was the great mother-goddess. Her son was Horus, the enemy of Seth. Sometimes she has the baby Horus on her lap. Sometimes she has a throne on her head, as she is Queen of the goddesses. Isis was also a great healer and magician. She got her magic powers by tricking Ra.

  5. Horus • Horus - Son of Osiris (a hawk, or a man with a hawk's head crowned with the crown of all Egypt) • Horus is shown as a hawk, or a man with a hawk's head and the crown of all Egypt. This makes him look similar to Ra, but Ra is crowned with the sun disk. Horus' crown is made of two parts. The white part is the crown of Upper Egypt (in the south) and the red part is the crown of Lower Egypt (including the Nile delta). Together they show that Horus ruled all Egypt.

  6. Seth • Seth - God of the desert, storm and violence (animal head with long curved pointed snout) • Seth was the God of the desert, storm and violence, which are all enemies of the fertile, prosperous, narrow valley of the Nile.

  7. The first main Monotheistic Religion Judaism focuses on relationships: between God and mankind, between God and the Jewish people, between the Jewish people and Israel, and between human beings.

  8. Some basic beliefs: • God exists, is one and unique, and is eternal. • Prayer is to be directed to God alone and to no other. • The words of the prophets are true. • Moses’ prophecies are true, and he was the greatest of the prophets.

Lineage of God’s People • Abraham • Covenant made between God and Abraham that his children would be as numerous as the stars of the sky. • Isaac and Ishmael • Children of Abraham • Isaac = Jewish religion • Ishmael = Islamic religion • Jacob (Israel) • Son of Isaac • 12 sons will become the tribes of Israel. • Joseph, one of the 12, is taken to Egypt and became a ruler. • After a famine, the rest of the family goes to Egypt.

  10. Moses • Born in the tribe of Levi, which later became the priestly tribe. • Raised by the daughter of Pharaoh.

  15. Moses returns to Egypt • Moses goes before Pharaoh and demands Israelites freed, Pharaoh refuses. • Plagues are cast upon Egypt by Moses trying to gain the freedom for Israel.

  21. Ten Commandments • 1. Do not worship other gods. • 2. Do not make idols or images to worship. • 3. Don’t take the Lord’s name in vain. • 4. Keep the Sabbath holy. • 5. Children, honor your parents. • 6. Do not murder. • 7. No adultery. • 8. No stealing. • 9. Do not give false testimony. • 10. Be content and do not “covet.”

  22. TORAH • 5 books of Moses; Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. • Torah is the “word of God” • Reading and studying the Torah is a form of prayer. • When it is copied by scribes it is read out loud so it is a living prayer.

Sabbath • As God rested on the seventh day in Genesis, Jewsmustrest on the seventh day. • Attend Temple- they are the longest and most elaborate services of the week. • Sabbath Dinner on Friday night with candles, wine, and breaking bread. • They must not do any work - Jews have different ideas of what this means.

  24. Diaspora • The dispersion of Jews outside of Israel from the sixth century b.c., when they were exiled to Babylonia, until the present time.
