Conduct an Interview * An interview is a good way to learn about a topic from someone who knows a lot about it • Before Interviewing • Research the topic and person you are interviewing. • Contact the person to set up a date, time and place. • Prepare a list of thoughtful questions that seek information you want or need.

  10. Conduct an Interview During the interview: • Introduce yourself. Explain why you are conducting the interview. • Ask your questions. • Listen actively to the answers, and take notes while maintaing eye contact and good posture. • Thank the person for his or her time. • After interviewing • Review your notes and write a summary of the exchange.

  11. Using a Thesaurus Thesaurus- a reference book that provide synonyms and antonyms to many words. Why use a thesaurus? used to improve vocabulary and to make writing more interesting

  12. Using a Thesaurus With a partner, use a thesaurus to find synonyms for each underlined word. Mamie loved baseball more than anything else. She thought it was amazing that she got paid to play. She felt very lucky. But she had skill, too. CW/HW- SPB pg . 228

  14. Let’s Try Kim lived with her dad on a horse farm in Kentucky. She owned a beautiful horse named Daisy. Kim wanted to enter Daisy in a contest at the county fair. She asked her dad to take them to the fair, but he had farm business to deal with. So, Kim called her aunt. Aunt Pat said she would be glad to take them, but her horse trailer needed repairs, and her mechanic was away. Kim thought very hard about what she could do. Kim asked her dad if his mechanic could fix the trailer. Her dad agreed, and the mechanic got to work. Kim and Aunt Pat drove to the fair and entered Daisy in the contest.

Mamie concludes , “ I guess there were still white people who didn’t want their kids admiring Jackie Robinson, or any colored ballplayer, no matter how good they were.” Does this remind you of a character in another book we read? Explain.

  24. What does the author think? 1. Jo had to feed the neighbor’s cat, and she just wanted to get it over with. The smell of the canned food nearly made her gag, and the cat hair made her nose itchy. She’d much rather be doing something else, but she needed the money. 2. Jo always looked forward to feeding the Smith’s cat. Sweet Pea was so cute and cuddly, purring and rubbing against her. Jo loved to pet and brush Sweet Pea. She wished she could have a cat of her own. She felt lucky to have this job.

  31. Let’s Practice After the camping trip, Pat had piles of filthy laundry to wash. He sorted everything as it came out of the dryer. The biggest challenge was matching all the socks so they were in the correct pairs and were given back to the right person. There were a dozen pairs of socks that were different materials and different colors. There were two pairs of cotton socks, one read and one gray. There were seven pairs of wool socks-six were blue, and one pair was brown. Three pairs were black acrylic. Figuring out the sock situation was confusing.

First of all, he doesn’t bark, he gurgles and burps! He makes this watery sound from deep in his throat, and then he loudly belches. He has shaggy gray fur and his big brown eyes peer out at you around the curly tufts, as though he finds you amusing. He weighs a ton, but he thinks he’s tiny and will slyly try to sit in you lap. We call him our four-legged, wild-eyed circus beast.
