About Hansard • Debates of the Senate: • Official records debuted in 1871, in English only • French official records debuted in 1895 • Debates of the House of Commons: • Debuted in 1875, in both official languages • Early Debates project, including: • Reconstituted debates for the years without an official record, and • Translated debates for the years without French official records

TheProject • Library of Parliament initiative • Initially a LOP / LAC collaboration • Project went through an RFI stage for structural analysis/XML conversion • Currently offers a PDF-based delivery through a known provider, canadiana.org To provide access to a consolidated, full-text searchable collection of digital versions of historical debates of the Parliament of Canada, free to the public at point of use, and in both official languages.

The Project - Continued Canadiana… • had already digitized a significant portion of early official publications • is in the process of getting Trusted Digital Repository Certification, meeting our digital preservation requirement • has years of experience in digital delivery in a library-friendly model • offers a cost effective solution

Challenges and lessons learned • Complex and changing documents impacting processing • Variation of quality in the print originals • Different output from current debates • Volume level only • What level of metadata? • Strength of an existing platform / Limitations of the platform • Next steps: enhancements, broader scope of content
