  1. THE IPDE PROCESS Lesson 4.1

  2. What are the three major factors that can contribute to risk while driving? Driver Factors Eating Cell phone Vehicle Factors Bald tires Bad wipers Roadway & Environment Factors Snow Construction Risk

  3. What are the steps of the IPDE process? What is the Smith System? Identify -- What do we Identify? Predict -- What do we Predict? Decide-- What do we Decide? Execute-- What do we Execute? Organized method to help drivers develop good seeing habits. Aim High Keep Eyes Moving Get the big Picture Make sure others see you Leave Yourself and “out” What components of the IPDE process does this cover? Good Seeing Habits

  4. IDENTIFY Give meaning to what you see. Know when, where, how, and what to look for!!! Open zones Other users Road features and conditions Traffic controls Identify

  5. Identify • What are the six zones of the Zone Control System?

  6. Zones and Searching Ranges • Open zone: space you can drive without restriction • Closed Zone: space not open to you because of a restriction • Line of sight: distance you can see ahead in the direction you are looking

  7. Visual Search Pattern

  8. Predict • Predicting Actions of Others: • Path of travel of the hazard • Where might the other driver go? What zone might be closed? Will I have an open zone for escape? • Actions of the hazard • What action will other users take? Is more than one action possible? • Space of the hazard • Will I have an open zone? • Point of conflict of the hazard • If I have no open zone for escape, where might our paths cross and a conflict occur?

  9. Predict • Predicting Control of Your Vehicle: • Speed • What are the traffic roadway and weather conditions? • How is my traction? • Knowledge • The more you know the better you can predict. • Judgment • Speed, time, space, distance, traction, visibility • Experience • More helps ability to predict accurately
