JSYB Predicate Noun • What is a predicate noun? • Using what you know about predicates and nouns, write your best guess on your half-sheet. • Discuss your answer with your table group – read your answer, explain why you think your answer may be correct, listen to everyone else’s answer. • Decide as a group on the best description of a predicate noun. • Share with the class

  5. jsyb A predicate noun: • is a noun that is located in the predicate of a sentence. • always follows a linking verb. • renames the subject. Example: The dessert is chocolate cake. Isis a linking verb. Chocolate cake is a noun that is in the predicate. Chocolate cake renames dessert.

  6. jsyb: Think About Explain how you know that each sentence has a predicate noun. • The nurse is her mother. • The Pontiac Trans Am was the coolest car! • Michael Jordan became a famous basketball player. How do you know that this sentence does not have a predicate noun? Smiling broadly, Jenny devoured her mom’s spaghetti.

  14. Think about… Answer the following question on your half sheet. Work in table groups. You may make a list of ideas. • What is the relationship between an author/writer and the audience?

  15. Let’s go to the movies • Think about a movie that you rented or saw at the movie theater. • Who do you think the intended audience was? • Why do you think that? • What do you think the purpose or point of the movie was? • How do you know?

  16. As a reader and as a writer, It is important to think about purpose and audience. Purpose: An author’s purpose is his or her main reason for writing. Think: Why did the author write this? Audience: An author’s audience is the particular group of readers or viewers that reads, sees, or hears a message. Think For whom did the author write this?

  23. Audience Advice • EQ: How do I identify the audience for a text or a speech? • Think about who the audience is, what they know, and what they want to hear. • Once you know this information, you can target your writing to your audience.
