United We Can: A Case Study, Newman (2008) United We Can – an organization founded by Ken Lyotier and Binner - Vancouver, Canada, 2008, in response to persistent problems of drug addiction, mental health issues, poverty and homelessness, where: Social capital is treated as a by-product of organizations based on incentives and memberships Shifts emphasis from ‘getting by’ to ‘getting ahead’ through bridging networks Success is primarily based on three imperatives: ecological, economic and social interactions Conclusion of the study: Social capital is important for community development through network building and access to resources An initiative for healthy development

CASE STUDY: SHIFT FROM AGRICULTURE TO MANUFACTURING TO AUTOASSEMBLY • Tupelo-lee county, Mississippi cited as best example of structural transformation • Spill over effects to whole society in the form of jobs creation • Transformation from heavily reliant agriculture and garment industry to growing community of skilled manufacturing • In 2007 won the competition for a Toyota vehicle assembly plant with creation of 2000 new manufacturing jobs and total of 5000 jobs SECRET TO SUCCESS: • Application of modern community and economic development principles via social capital formation • Unified action plan • Strong private sector leadership • Creation of foundation acceptable to emerging economic needs • Positive race relationship • Strong local partnership and private intervention “ Social capital and private sector involvement leads to welfare development and productivity”
