  1. A (half) book report on Robert Greene’s The 50th Law Becoming Fearless

  2. Synopsis • From hustling in the hood at the tender age of 12, to standing at the brink of success, to nearly being murdered, to his meteoritic raise back to fame, Rapper 50 Cent reveals the invaluable lessons in human nature, strategy, and life. With the clear prose of Robert Greene, we begin to understand the elements that are critical to success, whether it’s on the dangerous streets of the ghetto or the corporate jungle of the music industry.

  3. The 10 Laws • 1. Intense Realism • 2. Self-Reliance • 3. Opportunism • 4. Calculated Momentum • 5. Aggression • 6. Authority • 7. Connection • 8. Mastery • 9. Self-Belief • 10. The Sublime

  4. Intense Realism – See Things for What They Are • “The real poetry and beauty in life comes from an intense relationship with reality in all its aspects. Realism is in fact the ideal we must aspire to, the highest point of human rationality”

  5. Self-Reliance – Make Everything Your Own • “Think of it this way: dependency is a habit that is so easy to acquire. We life in a culture that offers you all kinds of crutches—experts to turn to, drugs to cure any psychological unease, mild pleasures to help pass or kill time, jobs to keep you just above water. It is hard to resist. But once you give in, it is like a prison you enter that you cannot ever leave. You continually look outward for help and this severely limits your options and maneuverability. When the time comes, as it inevitably does, when you must make an important decision, you have nothing inside of you to depend on”

  6. Self-Reliance – Make Everything Your Own • “We must see the desire for a return to that phase [of childhood longing for dependency] as regressive and dangerous. It comes from fear – of being responsible for our success and failure, of having to act on our own and make the hard decisions.” • “Your life must be a progression towards ownership – first mentally of your independence, and then physically of your work, owning what your produce.” • Cornelius Vanderbilt: “Never be a minion, always be an owner.”

  7. Opportunism – Turning Shit Into Sugar • “I must make the most of what I have, even the bad stuff, because things are not going to get better on their own. It is foolish to wait; tomorrow may bring even worse shit.” • “These are not adverse circumstance but merely life as it is. You have no time to lose to fear and depression, and you do not have the luxury of waiting”

  8. Opportunism – Turning Shit Into Sugar • “According to conventional wisdom, an opportunity is something that exists out there in the world; if it comes our way and we seize it, it brings us money and power. This could be a particular job, the perfect fit for us; it could be a chance to create or join a new venture. It could be meeting the appropriate person. In any event, it depends on being at the right place at the right time and having the proper skills to take advantage of this propitious moment. We generally believe there are only a few such golden chances in life, and most of us are waiting for them to cross our path. This concept is extremely limited in scope. It makes us dependent on outside forces. It stems from a fearful, passive attitude towards life that is counterproductive. It constrains our minds to a small circle of possibility. The truth is that for the human mind, everything that crosses its path can be a potential tool for power and expansion.”

  9. Opportunism – Turning Shit Into Sugar • “True opportunists do not require urgent, stressful circumstances to become alert and inventive. They operate this way on a daily basis. They channel their aggressive energy into hunting down possibilities for expansion in the most banal and insignificant events. Everything is an instrument in their hands, and with this enlarged notion of opportunity, they create more of it in their lives and gain great power.”

  10. Calculated Momentum – Keep Moving • “Understand: momentum in life comes from increased fluidity, a willingness to try more, to move in a less constricted fashion.” • On emotional flow: “What you want is for these endless emotions that assail you during the day to wash over you, to never hold on to one single emotion for very long.”

  11. Aggression – Know When To Be Bad • “If we are waiting and settling for what we have, it is not because we are good and nice but because we are fearful. We need to get rid of the fear and guilt we might have for asserting ourselves. It serves no purpose except to keep us down.” • “This comes from your attitude – fearless and always prepared to fight. It radiates outward and can be read in your manner without you having to speak a word. By a paradoxical law of human nature, trying to please people less will make them more likely in the long run to respect and treat you better.”

  12. What I Understood So Far • Urgency • Stoicism • Boldness • Rationality • Realism • The extent of my own prejudices, blind-spots, and weaknesses
