  2. Who is he? • Roger Fenton was a British photographer. In 1853, he was appointed as the official photographer of the Crimean War, taking 360 photographs in all. Although his pictures only depicted the "acceptable" parts of the conflict, they were the first to capture the mundane aspects of warfare. After a few exhibits of his work in London and Paris, he returned to practicing law.

  3. L’entente cordiale • His pictures were taken on glass plates and processed and printed in a converted wine merchant's horse-drawn wagon. One picture of troops posing shows a group of British and French soldiers enjoying a drink and a smoke in an image called "L'Entente Cordiale".

  4. Fenton's most famous photograph is also one of the most well-known images of war. Across a desolate and featureless landscape, not a single figure can be found. The landscape is inhabited only by cannonballs -so plentiful that they first appear to be rocks - that stand in for the human casualties on the battlefield. The sense of emptiness and unease is heightened by the visual uncertainty created by the changing scale of the road and the sloping sides of the ravine.

  5. The artist’s vAN Photo assistant Marcus Sparling, seated on Roger Fenton’s photographic van, 1855. Fenton used this mobile darkroom to cover the Crimean War for a publishing company with assistance from the British government.
