WD’s Mandate • WD works to strengthen western innovation, business development, and community economic development through: • promoting the development and diversification of the western Canadian economy; • coordinating federal economic activities in the West; and • reflecting western Canadian interests in national decision making.

  3. WD’s role in the Federal Procurement and IRB Process • The Western Economic Diversification Act, mandates WD to guide, promote and coordinate the policies and programs of the Government of Canada, including the Federal Industrial and Regional Benefits Policy. • To develop and diversify the economy of Western Canada: • WD represents the interests of Western Canada’s aerospace, defence and marine industries in the application of the IRB policy; • WD identifies federal procurement and IRB opportunities on behalf of western Canadian industry; and • WD connects western Canadian industry to prime contractors and top tier suppliers with IRB obligations.

  4. WD’s strategic network includes • Key Federal Stakeholders • The procuring department(s) • Public Works and Government Services Canada (the contracting authority) • Industry Canada (the IRB Policy administrator) • Other Regional Development Agencies • Western Canadian Industry • Industry Associations • (National, Regional, Provincial) • Prime Contractors and Top Tier Suppliers • Western Provincial Governments

WD is a business facilitator • WD employs its strategic network to identify and connect western Canadian industry with prime contractors and top-tier suppliers. • WD produces supplier capabilities list for prime contractors related to current federal procurements. • WD hosts information sessions for western Canadian industry. • WD facilitates B2B meetings and coordinates pan-western supplier development tours between western Canadian industry and prime contractors and top tier suppliers. • WD represents the interests of western Canadian industry in international Forums.

  6. The Plan Launched in February 2012, by Minister Yelich, the Plan positions Western Canada’s shipbuilding industry as internationally competitive and sustainable. The Plan is designed to help ensure that SMEs can take advantage of shipbuilding opportunities, creating jobs and growth.

The Plan in action Invest • WD has invested more than $1M towards industrial marine training and applied research in BC, and will continue to examine investment opportunities to further develop and grow Western Canada’s shipbuilding industry. Inform • Today’s Summit has brought together key stakeholders to share information about the NSPS and the opportunities it represents. • Beginning Fall 2012 WD will host shipbuilding boot camps in each Western province. Showcase • WD will coordinate pan-western Supplier Development Tours with prime contractors based on their needs and as projects roll-out. Advocate • WD will advocate the interests of Western Canada’s shipbuilding industry to help ensure its long-term competitiveness.
