  1. Photosynthesis By: Sydney Thib, Michelle Kee, Kersti Sorra

  2. Photosynthesis is a biochemical process in which plants, algae, and some bacteria harness the energy of light to produce food. Evidence of Chemical Change • Colour of leaves change from brown to green throughout photosynthesis. • Oxygen gas is produced.

  3. Photosynthesis Equation Photosynthesis is a double displacement reaction Carbon Dioxide + Water + light energy → Glucose + Oxygen Gas CO2 + H2O + Energy → C6H12O6 + O2

  4. Reactants Covalent Covalent Covalent carbon dioxide + water + light energy CO2 + H2O + Energy

  5. Products Covalent Covalent glucose + oxygen gas C6H12O6 + O2

  6. Setting and Background Photosynthesis provides nutrients, and oxygen for its surrounding organismes. Some scientists that added insight on photosynthesis: Jan Baptista van Helmont John Woodward Joseph Priestley (1600’s) (1600’s) (1700’s)

  7. Scientists • Jan Baptista van Helmont, in the 1600s carried out a famous experiment. Van Helmont believed that water was the source of the extra mass and the plant's source of life. • John Woodward, in the late 1600s, tried to design an experiment to test Van Helmont hypothesis that water was the source of the extra mass. In a series of experiments over as many as 77 days, Woodward measured the water consumed by plants. • Joseph Priestley offered an interesting hypothesis that plants restore to the air whatever breathing animals and burning candles remove.

  8. Bonding +  (Carbon Dioxide) (Water/ Oxygen Dihydride) + (Glocose) (Oxygen Gas)
